Medieval Wall

Medieval Wall One of the most distinctive features of Alcúdia, is represented by its imposing walls, which stand before the visitor, as faithful vestiges of past times. The strategic location of Alcúdia meant a high risk for its inhabitants due to the constant plundering by pirates. Therefore, Jaume II ordered the construction of this protection system in 1298 with a main purpose, to provide a safe place for its inhabitants, the works were completed in 1360. Today, two of the old gates of the wall are still standing, the Moll and Sant Sebastià, as well as the quadrangular structure reinforced with 26 towers distributed along 1.5 km of perimeter and with an average height of 6 meters delimits the historic center. Gates of the Wall One of the greatest attractions of the wall are the access gates to it. Originally there were three: "the gate of the Moll or Xara", "the gate of Mallorca or Sant Sebastià" and "the gate of the Vila Roja", which is no longer preserved. The Gate of Mallorca or Sant Sebastià was the gate that connected Alcúdia with the royal road to Palma de Mallorca. Nowadays it preserves the moat and presents the aspect that gave it the restoration of 1963, carried out by G. Alomar (two exempt towers linked by a matacán of great dimensions crowned with battlements). You can also see a coat of arms of the city dating from the sixteenth century. The Moll or Xara Gate is located at the other end of the axis that divides the city into two halves, opening it towards the Puerto Mayor. It presents a structure well differentiated from the other door, the two towers that form it are joined by a body of guard with a small window originally protected by a machicolation of which only the corbels that support it are preserved. The large semicircular arched doorway leads to the covered space where the rake that used to close the door can still be seen.

Church of Sant Jaume - Sant Crist Chapel

Church of Sant Jaume The parish church is located next to the medieval wall, occupying the site where the primitive church of the fourteenth century was built. This construction, deeply linked to the history of Alcúdia, originally had the appearance of a fortification and in fact, on top of its roof, surveillance work was carried out. Its structure was part of the wall. In 1870, the state of deterioration of the temple caused part of the roof to collapse, leaving the church unusable, which was later demolished and built again in neo-Gothic style in the same place that the original construction had occupied. The works lasted until 1893. The present church has a single nave and side chapels with a ribbed roof. The presbytery is presided over by a neo-Gothic altarpiece, the work of L. Ferrer and M. Arcas, dedicated to San Jaime. On the main façade, the tympanum of the doorway houses a sculpture of St. James, the work of Remigia Caubet. A large rose window illuminates the interior of the temple, and above it, topping the facade, you can see the coat of arms of Alcúdia. Chapel of Sant Crist This construction next to the church was built at the end of the 17th century. It was erected to guard the image of Sant Crist, a polychrome carving from the 15th century, to which the miraculous events of 1507 are attributed. The chapel is of baroque style and can be accessed from inside the parish church. It presents a cover adorned with a dome in its central section. The head of the church contains the altarpiece, also in baroque style, which contains the carving of Sant Crist, which can be accessed by two side staircases.

Roman City of Pol-lèntia

Roman city of Pol-lèntia In 123 B.C. the Balearic Islands, under the command of the Roman Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus, were integrated into the Roman world and the cities of Pol-lèntia (in Alcúdia) and Palma were founded. As a consequence, a new culture and language was imposed: Latin. With the Romanization process, new urban models were implemented and urban life appeared for the first time. Pol-lèntia, being located between two bays, had two ports: the Major Port in the Bay of Alcúdia and the Minor Port in the Bay of Pollença. The remains found in the Roman city of Pol-lèntia, show us that it was a city that knew moments of great splendor. History of the site The first news of Pol-lèntia date from the sixteenth century, due to a series of casual findings as important as the bust of Augustus Veiled, and that are the starting point for a series of studies that extend over time to the present. The first systematic excavations began in the 1920s with Professor Gabriel Llabrés Quintana and Rafel Issassi. In 1936 the civil war marked a break in research, which later resumed until today, with such prominent names as Almagro, Tarradell, Arribas or Wood and, from the 50s, through the creation of the Hispanic American Archaeological Center, under the patronage of the William Bryant Foundation, which completed its work in the last years of the same decade, being relieved by the Consistory of the City of Pollentia. Archaeological area The Roman city of Pol-lèntia is located south of the historic center of Alcúdia, towards the port. With an extension of between 16 to 21 hectares, in which different excavated areas can be found, which reveal different revealing aspects of the lifestyle in this city during the Roman period. The excavated space allows us to see an urban structure, totally planned with a grid layout with parallel and perpendicular streets, a group of houses (La Portella), the forum where the public buildings were located and on the outskirts the theater. La Portella: This area, located south of the parish church, is the closest to the historic center. The remains that can still be seen correspond to a neighborhood of houses: the house "of the two Treasures", of which the entire floor plan organized by the central courtyard or atrium is preserved; the house "of the Bronze Head", and the house "Northwest", in addition to a series of structures categorized as workshops. Nowadays, the road layout can be seen, as well as a fragment of the Roman wall from the 3rd century AD. The Forum: This space was the social and religious center of the city. From inside you can see remains of the Capitoline temple, a set of tabernae (stores) that constituted the commercial area, as well as other structures of which include the edicule, which currently focuses much of the research on the urban layout of Pol-lèntia. The forum is where excavation campaigns are currently being carried out during the summer period. The long use of this area culminated with the settlement of a necropolis (around 600 AD). The Roman Theater: Located on the outskirts of the city of Pol-lèntia, it was a leisure center for the entire population from the first century AD. Of its semicircular structure without a roof, a good part of the vault or bleachers, the orchestra and the stage are preserved. It is also possible to see, as in the Forum, the remains of a necropolis over the structures of the theater. It is worth noting the particularity of being a theater excavated in the rock, unlike most Roman theaters. For the last thirty years a theater season has been held in August and has a large number of followers who, with their presence, keep alive the spirit of our ancestors.

Monographic Museum of Pol-lèntia

Pol-lèntia Monographic Museum The Pol-lèntia Monographic Museum, managed by the Alcúdia Town Council, is a section of the Museum of Mallorca, created in 1987 with the aim of bringing archaeological pieces recovered from their original environment, the Roman city of Pol-lèntia, which was inhabited between the second century B.C. and XII A.D. It is located in the historic center, in a building that housed an old hospital of the sixteenth century. The museum discourse is structured around two themes: the public and private spheres, to explain the main aspects of Roman culture based on the remains it has left us. The museum exhibits a series of pieces from the excavation campaigns carried out in Pol-lèntia, an important collection of ceramics, as well as various glass objects, jewelry, etc. Most of the pieces on display correspond to the first and second centuries, the time of maximum splendor of the city. It is worth mentioning the three marble sculptures found in the area of the forum, as well as a female bronze head that gives its name to one of the houses in the Portella area where it was found. There is also a space dedicated to the necropolis of Pol-lèntia, with the inscription of Cornelius Atticus.

"Casals" Renaissance

Renaissance "Casals" In just a walk through the streets of Alcúdia we find numerous details, which remind us of the rich history of the city. We can observe that the old facades alternate with others exquisitely restored. Throughout the historic center are located numerous stately homes of Renaissance style, known as "casals" that, during the XVI-XVII centuries, underwent major transformations that especially affected their facades, in order to adapt them to the stylistic canons of the time. During the Germanic War (1521-1523), the nobles of Ciutat (Palma) found refuge in Alcúdia, where they introduced humanist ideas that proved to be very popular among the local aristocracy. With these ideas they introduced the new stylistic language that, from that moment on, would be applied to the works of the most important houses in the city. Most of these buildings have survived to the present day without having undergone hardly any transformations, thanks to which one can admire examples such as Can Castell; Can Fondo (headquarters of the Historical Archive and exhibition hall); Can Can Canta (Can Barrera); Can Domenec (headquarters of the Consortium of the Roman City of Pol-lèntia) or Can Costa (Can Sureda), among others.

Alcúdia Town Hall - "La Sala".

ALCÚDIA TOWN HALL - "La Sala" La Sala is the name by which the building that houses the Alcúdia Town Hall is popularly known. Built on the site formerly occupied by the houses of the University of the Villa, it is a new building inaugurated in 1929. The initial project proposal is the work of the architect Guillem Reynés Font, although it was the architect Carlos Garau who would end up building it, introducing some changes to the initial proposal due to the sudden death of the first one. Historicist building consisting of a central body in the form of a tower containing the main portal, on which there is a stately balcony and a line of windows topped by the clock tower. This tower is made of glazed tiles and has a bell tower crowned by a weathervane in the shape of a dragon. On each side of the tower there are two bodies containing on the first floor two monumental windows decorated in the Mallorcan regionalist style, which are extended on the side facades with windows of the same type. The main doorway is accessed by a central staircase. Inside the building, the plenary hall stands out, from which the interior spaces dedicated to offices are distributed.

Victòria Chapel

Ermita de la Victòria The hermitage is located about 7 km. from the center of Alcúdia, in an environment of great natural and scenic value, between pine trees and sea with spectacular views over the bay of Pollença, fully protected. The first known hermits in Alcúdia date back to the 14th century with the alchemist hermit Fray Diego. This small temple remained as a place of worship associated with the image of the Virgin Mare de Déu de la Victòria de las Germanies. In the oratory you can still appreciate the characteristic defensive character of the first building, which was erected during the XVII-XVIII centuries. The lower floor is occupied by the church with a single nave whose entrance is through a rectangular portal, with side chapels. Covered with a baroque barrel vault, like the altarpiece, with a dressing room where you can venerate the image of the Virgin, polychrome carving of the fifteenth century, probably brought to the place by Fray Diego himself, (legend has it that a shepherd named Jordi Boi found the image of the Virgin among the bushes). In the upper part of the hermitage we find the completely renovated guest house. The Victoria festivities are held on July 1 and 2. For the locals are celebrations full of feeling, where they dance the traditional "Ball de Bot", the council invites to "rum cremat" and fritters late at night, and ending with the traditional offering of sprigs of chamomile. The hermitage of La Victòria is also the starting point of several hiking trails with a moderate degree of difficulty, we highlight the ascent to Penya des Migdia and Talaia d'Alcúdia.

Santa Ana Church

Santa Ana Church

Church of Santa Ana de Alcudia The church of Santa Ana is located on the outskirts of Alcudia, halfway between Alcudia and the port, in front of the cemetery. This construction dates back to the 13th century, possibly the work of Diego Español, and in the oldest sources it is documented as Santa María de la Torre. In 2004 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and is one of the best preserved examples of a church of the first Christian repopulation, after the Catalan conquest of 1229, on the island. The building forms a single body with a first floor and a two-slope roof supported by three Gothic arches. The interior consists of a single nave with a gabled roof. The temple is dedicated to Santa Ana and San Joaquín. On the façade, above the entrance portal there is a canopy and a Gothic pedestal, where until recently there was the image of the Virgin of the Good News, topped by a semicircular arch and a belfry. The original altarpieces and triptychs are kept in the parish museum. The church sits on the site of the ancient Roman city and has undergone various renovations and conservation work over the centuries. In 2014, thanks to an agreement with the Bishopric of Mallorca, it was possible to partially excavate inside. The results made it possible to document two construction phases. One corresponding to the primitive church, quadrangular in plan and with access from the south facade, probably built in the late thirteenth century or early fourteenth century, with an associated cemetery. To the west is attached a strong foundation for a possible bell tower. The second major phase of the church gave the building practically its present appearance. The original building was enlarged on the east, with the construction of the apse and the sacristy, and on the west, with a new section with a door, which meant the walling up of the southern one. It is interesting to note that the primitive church sits on powerful levels from the Islamic period. Under them, ancient levels were documented, essentially from the Roman Imperial period (1st-2nd centuries A.D.), especially highlighting five ditches with an east-west direction that correspond to cultivation ditches of surely Roman agricultural structures, not documented to date in Mallorca.

Major Tower

Torre Major The Tower is located on the road to Alcanada, a short distance from the Port of Alcúdia and about 3 km from Alcúdia. In the year 1598 a Royal privilege meant the improvement of the entire defensive layout of the municipality, although the construction of the Tower was not carried out until the reign of King Philip III, who completed the fortification of the area by ordering the construction of a fort in the bay of Puerto Mayor, hence the name of Torre Major, which was constituted as one of the five points of coastal surveillance of Alcudia. In 1602 the coats of arms (work of the sculptor Antoni Verger) were placed over the gate, although there is evidence that in 1613 the work had not yet been completed. It seems that by 1860 the tower was already uninhabited, although its military use continued until well into the twentieth century.

Alcúdia Auditorium

Auditori d'Alcúdia The auditorium of Alcúdia is a clear example of symbiosis between modernity and tradition. This building was inaugurated in the year 2000 and is shown as a balcony to the medieval city, from which we can observe the Gate of Mallorca or Sant Sebastià that invites us to enter. It has been a major challenge for a city that believes in culture as the basis of human and social development and has a tradition marked by its history and heritage, which has to give way to new generations yet to come. We can say that it is par excellence the emblem of contemporaneity, the building offers simplicity of forms and purity of materials (glass, concrete, wood, stainless steel). The Auditorium of Alcúdia, is a multipurpose building that is at the service of citizens and visitors to enjoy the culture. It is characterized by having a stable program throughout the year of performing arts and music and is the headquarters of the Municipal School of Music of Alcúdia. The cultural offer in performing arts and music is wide, this space allows programming all kinds of cultural events: classical music, circus, jazz, theater, dance, film, audiovisual .... We also believe it is important to highlight its work to stay close to all citizens without exclusion and highlight their work in favor of fragile groups, so we can find an extensive program of concerts and performances of solidarity.

Can Torró Library

One of the most illustrious neighbors of Alcúdia was Reinhard Mohn, of German origin and one of the most important publishers in Europe. He discovered this corner of the Mediterranean and gave the Can Torró Library as a gift. In 1988, thanks to a cooperation agreement between the Alcúdia Town Council and the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Alcúdia Can Torró Library Foundation was created with the aim of providing a public library service in the town of Alcúdia. The building chosen was the old manor house of Can Torró, restored and suitably fitted out for its new social function. This building has recently been joined by its annex, Can Fondo, another architectural jewel of the 14th century. Their courtyards have been joined and one place complements the other in its task of promoting art and culture. From the very beginning it was conceived not only as a library, but as a multimedia space, a place of dynamic leisure for all ages, going beyond the traditional concept of book storage. It is easy to see children enjoying their afternoons in the games room, students doing their homework, older people looking for a good book or consulting the discography and people passing through reading all kinds of magazines. Throughout the year they offer a large number of activities for all audiences: exhibitions, storytelling, children's workshops, concerts, lectures, etc., which have a good number of followers and followers of all ages.

POI

Cave of Sant Martí

The Cave of Sant Martí The cave of Sant Martí is located about 5 km from the center of the village and is situated at the foot of a mountain, known by the name of Puig de Sant Martí, southwest of Alcúdia. By tradition, it is considered that this natural cave was used as a place of worship, as a sanctuary by the primitive Christians who inhabited the Roman city of Pol-lèntia, although the first news about its existence appears in a document from 1268. Access to the cave is by a steep staircase and down to a drop of twelve meters. Inside there is a small courtyard and on both sides there are two small altars, one dedicated to Sant Jordi and the other to Sant Martí. The construction of these chapels began during the 13th century, after the Catalan conquest, but the greatest impetus was given in the second half of the 14th century. They are two chapels, which are entered through two semicircular arches, covered and keystone in the crossing of the ribs. This type of sanctuary is unique, so far no other is known. Engravings with Templar symbolism have been found. It was in this place where the miracle of the Holy Christ of Alcúdia took place, in which according to the documents, he sweated blood and water on February 24, 1507, an event that marked the history of the town and that every three years, on July 26, a procession is held to venerate the miracle that was attributed to the religious image.

Talaia d'Alcúdia and Sa Penya des Migdia

La Talaia and sa Penya des Migdia This route runs through the natural area of Cabo Pinar, a peninsula that separates the bays of Pollença and Alcúdia, currently preserved by the Law of natural areas of the Balearic Islands. To reach the "Talaia d'Alcúdia or Penya des Migdia", we must go to the hermitage of Victòria, we will pass near the beach S'Illot and one kilometer away from the beach, we will discover the Font de la Victòria, protected by a porch. It is a double itinerary of almost 7km. distance: you can choose between climbing to the Talaia (445 m. high) or turn off towards the "Penya des Migdia" also known by the locals as the Penya Roja, more modest in height (354 m.), but of enormous beauty. Although it is not a particularly hard route, it does require an acceptable physical condition to be able to do it. The excursion runs at the beginning by a cart path. A short distance away, on the left, are the Tres Creus, where three crosses recall the place where tradition placed the discovery of the Virgin of Victòria. We continue towards Talaia d'Alcúdia and on the left hand side we will see a path with a wooden handrail as protection, if we turn off on it we will head towards Penya des Migdia. The path runs along the cliff, it is always advisable to take extreme caution, especially on slippery ground. We will arrive at a pass built on the rock in the form of a tunnel. After this step you have to pay close attention to where you put your feet, because this last section is somewhat dangerous, although it has aids, there is a chain on the right, which we can grab. The top of Penya des Migdia is a fortified redoubt that is unique in the Balearic Islands. In the year 1630 the cannon that has survived to the present day was placed. To continue the excursion to the Talaia d'Alcúdia we would return to the point where we left the cart track and continue to the top. This route is well marked. It is the highest watchtower in Mallorca and its construction dates back to the year 1567, when it became necessary to take control of the bays and thus prevent attacks by pirates and privateers. From the watchtower we can contemplate an impressive panoramic view of the bay of Pollença and the cape of Formentor, the Pinar cape and the bay of Alcúdia reaching to sight the island of Menorca in the days in which the visibility is optimal.

It comprises totally contrasting landscapes: mountains with pine and oak forests, the plain traditionally dedicated to dry farming and the sea. These lakes are known as l' Estany des Ponts and l'Estany Menor. L' Estany des Ponts, is the larger of the two, has an area of 40.5 ha, extends parallel to the sea in a strip of 1,500m. and an average distance of 300m. This lake is communicated with the Natural Park of S'Albufera through a channel and with the sea through two U-shaped channels that act as a spillway in case of floods. It is worth mentioning the ecosystem that inhabits it, with a great variety of plant species that grow on its banks and the fauna that lives in its waters. The western bank is rectangular in shape, with no urbanization of any kind, in contrast to the maritime strip that houses the "Lago Esperanza" housing development, characterized by the presence of the MA-12 regional road, which divides it into two parts. Recently, it has become a canoeing technical center, the Balearic Canoeing Federation holds different competitions throughout the year.

Renaissance Wall

Renaissance Wall The construction of this second wall enclosure was a consequence of the evolution of warfare and weapons technology. It was found that neither the towers nor the walls allowed the installation of artillery pieces of medium caliber, this fact made it possible that, throughout the seventeenth century, King Philip II ordered the construction of a walled enclosure more in line with the needs of the city. The works began during his reign and were finished in 1660, when Philip IV reigned. The new enclosure surrounded the previous walls, leaving a space between them. Its layout was in the form of a star-shaped bastion of low height, and was ideal for placing artillery pieces. Finally, eight bastions were built starting from the Puerta de Mallorca: Del Rey, De la Reina, de San Ferran, Santa Maria, San Felip, San Lluís, Santa Teresa and San Antoni. The modern walls were dismantled at the beginning of the 20th century for sanitary reasons and urban growth. At present, only the bastion of Sant Ferran is preserved, inside which the bullring was built and you can still see a sentry box, the layout of the bastion of Santa Maria (which houses a public school) and some very deteriorated remains of the bastion of the king and queen. In 2018, a restoration project was carried out on the bastions of the king and queen, the valley and the walls that connect them. They are located in the northern part of the historic center of Alcúdia, between the street of Sant Sebastià and the square of the Vila Roja. The remains were in a state that made them very vulnerable to human action and inclement weather. With the restoration, the structure of the wall has been delimited and consolidated, the valley has been partially recovered and a pedestrian walkway with night lighting has been installed.

Bullring

Plaza de Toros The bullring of Alcudia was built in 1892 in the "Baluart de Sant Ferran". This bastion was part of the structure of the Renaissance wall built in the seventeenth century and we can still see the sentry box, as it was a bastion of military defense. Based on this fact, we would be talking about the oldest bullring in Mallorca, with a capacity of 1,037 seats. In Alcúdia two big annual bullfights were held, coinciding with the local festivities of July 25th (Sant Jaume) and August 15th (Mare de Déu d'Agost).
