Hita preserves its medieval old town, which was designated a historic site in 1965. Under Muslim rule, a fortress was built atop the hill. Throughout the 13th century, a significant Jewish quarter developed there. A century later, Juan Ruiz, Archpriest of Hita, wrote *The Book of Good Love*. The 15th century marked a final period of splendor, with the Marquis of Santillana serving as lord of the town.
