Trejo River Canyon

PARAJE

The Trejo River Canyon is a natural fluvial place in Setenil de las Bodegas, in the province of Cádiz, formed by the Guadalporcún river, which in this section is called Trejo river. The landscape is organized in a narrow and elongated gorge, with escarpments and rocky walls very visible next to the town center, and the urban section of the river has an approximate length of 1,594 meters in the technical documentation available. The most characteristic feature is the strong contrast between the riverbed and the houses built on and under the rock, which make this gorge one of the visual hallmarks of Setenil. From the river promenade and the accesses to the village, one can observe the limestone cliffs, the changes in the level of the terrain and the direct relationship between the erosion of the river and the shape of the settlement. It is a particularly interesting place to understand how a valley conditions the architecture and urban planning. Its geological interest is remarkable: the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain lists it as the calcarenitic escarpments of the Trejo River, linked to ancient fossiliferous marine sediments. This geological reading adds value to a landscape already singular for its morphology and for the presence of very marked erosive forms in limestone and calcarenite. In addition to its scenic value, the set is part of the cultural landscape of Setenil recognized by the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage. In the urban section, human pressure has altered the riverbed, but the site remains one of the most representative and visited areas of the municipality for its monumental and natural character at the same time.
