The Trejo River Canyon is a natural river landscape of exceptional beauty located in the municipality of Setenil de las Bodegas, in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Physically, it takes the form of a narrow, elongated gorge approximately 5 km long, formed by the deep cutting of the Guadalporcún River, which in this section is known as the Trejo River. The landscape features highly visible limestone cliffs and rock walls, with an elevation range of 441 to 515 meters, resulting from the dissolution of limestone by the erosive action of water over the centuries. Its geological significance is remarkable: the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain classifies it as the Calcarenite Cliffs of the Trejo River, associated with ancient fossil-bearing marine sediments, and it constitutes an area of exceptional natural wealth included in the Conservation Plan under reference CA6. From the viewing point—especially along the new 440-meter riverside promenade, elevated 10 meters above the riverbed—visitors can admire the natural canyon through which the river flows and, at the same time, the typical cave houses of Setenil, built literally beneath the rock ledges, forming a striking example of vernacular architecture that defines the town’s urban skyline. The site is recognized as a protected area in the conservation plan for groundwater body 062.001 Setenil, and guidebooks often describe it as a “village in the rock.” The best time to visit is in the spring and fall, when the river’s flow and temperature make for a more pleasant visit, avoiding the summer heat and the intense winter cold.
