Alto de la Cruz
MIRADOREl Alto de la Cruz is a natural lookout point located in Peñalba de Santiago, in the municipality of Ponferrada, province of León, within the mountainous landscape of the Montes Aquilianos and the Valle del Silencio. Its location on a hillside offers a sweeping view of the valley and the peaks surrounding the village, one of the most unique spots in El Bierzo due to its seclusion and distinctive landscape. The viewpoint is designed to allow visitors to take in the rugged terrain, the forests, and the succession of mountains that frame Peñalba de Santiago. The appeal of the visit lies in interpreting the landscape: the head of the valley, the slopes descending toward the stream, and the sense of being enclosed by mountains that characterizes this village, nestled in a narrow valley floor and protected by prominent peaks. From the viewpoint, you can observe the main geological formations of El Bierzo, including the Aquilian Mountains and the entrance to the Valley of Silence, flanked by two pyramid-shaped rock formations. These limestones, formed from sediments of a seabed dating back 445 million years to the Upper Ordovician period, give rise to iconic landforms such as Pico de la Guiana, Los Doce Apóstoles, and El Arca de Noé. The overlook sits atop marine deposits from the Silurian period, dating back approximately 415 million years. It is a landmark in the geography of El Bierzo that should be designated a Point of Geological Interest, as it offers a panoramic view of the region’s geological past. The best time to visit is in spring, fall, or on clear winter days, when weather conditions allow for the best view of the landscape.

Cueva de San Genadio
PARAJEThe Cave of San Genadio is a small natural hermitage carved into the rock, located in the valley of Silencio, next to Peñalba de Santiago, in the municipality of Ponferrada, in the province of León. It is located in the mid-mountain environment of the Montes Aquilianos, where the landscape combines ravines, forest-covered slopes and footpaths. Tradition links it to San Genadio, a religious figure associated with ascetic retreat in this corner of Bierzo. The most remarkable thing for the visitor is the cave itself, on a very small scale, integrated into a rocky front and surrounded by vegetation. The route to the cave is along a hiking trail from Peñalba de Santiago, which makes the visit a scenic as well as a heritage experience: the path crosses a narrow and silent valley, with a forest atmosphere and views of the mountainous relief. Its interest is not only natural, but also historical and devotional, because it is part of the spiritual memory of Peñalba and the Valle del Silencio. In the sources consulted, it also appears as a place of worship and as a well-known enclave on local routes, included in informative resources about the town and its trails. The popular tradition relates it to the stay of the saint and with the character of meditation that defines the whole place. Because of its scenic, religious and walking value, the Cave of San Genadio acts as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the surroundings of Peñalba de Santiago. Its attraction lies in the combination of nature, silence, heritage and legend, in a protected setting that is very representative of the most mountainous part of Bierzo.

Iglesia de Santiago de Peñalba
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of Santiago de Peñalba is a Catholic temple in the town of Peñalba de Santiago, in the municipality of Ponferrada, province of León, Castilla y León, and is located at coordinates 42.42722, -6.54085. It is a rural church, also cited as a hermitage in some heritage descriptions, and is one of the most notable examples of pre-Romanesque Mozarabic art in Spain. Its construction dates from the 10th century, with a usual chronology between 931 and 937, linked to the monastic environment promoted by San Genadio in the Valle del Silencio. The specialized bibliography considers it to be the only preserved vestige of that hermitage or early medieval monastery, and relates it to the period of the repopulation of the Duero basin. From the artistic point of view, it has a marked Mozarabic style with pre-Romanesque features. Its singular floor plan and its value as a very well preserved monument stand out, with special interest for the spatial complexity of the temple and its integration in the traditional hamlet of Peñalba. In terms of heritage, it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and a National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1931. Its importance is not limited to the building, but it is part of the historical ensemble of the village, one of the best preserved rural enclaves of El Bierzo.
