Gallopito Fountain

PARAJE

La Fuente de Gallopito is a place of water and rural character located in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz, within the typical pasture landscape of southwestern Extremadura. The municipal information cites it among the most outstanding springs and fountains of the municipality, together with that of Alcanzanidos, and points out that it has a ferruginous taste, a feature that explains its traditional interest. It is a small enclave of spring water associated with the natural environment of pasture and a local network of very abundant sources in a municipality with numerous points of emergence. By its very nature, the interest of the place is not in large dimensions or in a monumental landscape, but in the presence of water, its rural context and the uniqueness of its physical and organoleptic properties. The fountain is linked to the culture of the traditional use of water in Jerez de los Caballeros, where the springs have had a value of supply, livestock use and reference of the territory. The municipal website also describes it as medicinal, which reinforces its local relevance as a natural resource recognized by the population. Its interest for the visit lies in understanding the transition landscape between pasture, farms and springs, very characteristic of this part of Extremadura, and in observing a simple but significant element of the rural natural heritage of the municipality. The sources consulted do not show dimensions, specific legal protection or legends associated with the site.

St. Bartholomew's Church

St. Bartholomew's Church

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of San Bartolomé is a parish church in Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz), located within the Historic Complex, in the northern part of the walled area and near the old Alconchel Gate. It has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument, and the protection decree includes the church, the bell tower, the sacristy, adjoining outbuildings and a small north courtyard. Its origin dates back to the 15th century, although the building was remodeled and enlarged on several occasions throughout its history. The consulted documentation relates it to an old hermitage or previous basilica, on which the current temple was built, so it presents a complex constructive evolution and not a homogeneous factory. From the patrimonial point of view, the bell tower stands out especially, for its dominant presence and for the decorative and chromatic richness pointed out in the official declaration. The complex also conserves the sacristy and other annexed spaces, which reinforces its interest as a relevant piece of Jerez's religious heritage. The church is part of the monumental landscape of Jerez de los Caballeros, a town with a strong historical and defensive imprint, in which this temple stands out as one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks of the old town.

St. Michael the Archangel Church

St. Michael the Archangel Church

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of San Miguel Arcángel is a parish church in Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz (Extremadura), located in the Plaza de España, in the historic center of the municipality, within the monumental complex of Jerez. Due to its location and local tradition, it is also referred to as the temple of San Miguel, although its patrimonial use is clearly identified as a church. It is a building constructed between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, with a configuration linked to the late Gothic, to which was added in later times a baroque tower of great visual presence, built in the mid-eighteenth century. This combination of architectural phases explains the interest of the monument within the historic center of Jerez de los Caballeros. Among its most outstanding elements are the Baroque tower, some seventy meters high, and an interior with altarpieces of notable relief, in addition to the main altar, the painted dome and the choir stalls, according to the available descriptions. The most common reference places it as one of the most valuable temples of the local historic center, in a municipality declared a historic-artistic site for the richness of its monuments. Its patrimonial interest derives, therefore, from the superposition of medieval and baroque phases and its role as an urban landmark in the center of Jerez de los Caballeros. In the sources provided, there is no specific cataloguing as an Asset of Cultural Interest for this church in particular, so it should be described with caution as a historic temple of great local and regional value.

Brovales Reservoir

PARAJE

The Brovales Reservoir is a rural reservoir in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz, located in the surroundings of the Brovales district and associated with the stream of the same name. It forms part of the network of water resources that supply the irrigable area of Jerez de los Caballeros, together with the Valuengo reservoir, within a landscape of pastureland and small meadows for agricultural use. Its capacity is quoted in official sources of the Junta de Extremadura as 7.42 hm³. As a site, it is of interest for its condition as a sheet of water in an open and little transformed environment, where hydraulic and recreational uses are combined. Outdoor leisure activities have been promoted on its banks, especially bathing, hiking, fishing and cycling along the network of rural roads in the area. The place is attractive for the relationship between water, agricultural landscape and mountainous horizon, very characteristic of the southwest of Extremadura. Its relevance is above all functional and territorial: it participates in the local irrigation and in the availability of water for the municipality, at the same time that it acts as a recreational space for neighbors and visitors. In recent years the City Council of Jerez de los Caballeros has promoted actions for the recovery and enhancement of the reservoir and other natural areas linked to the Ardila River and its districts.

Valuengo Reservoir

PARAJE

The Valuengo Reservoir is a reservoir for hydraulic and landscape use located in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros, in the province of Badajoz, on the bed of the Ardila River. It was built in the fifties of the twentieth century and is part of the water system of southwestern Badajoz, with a capacity of 15 to 19.3 hm³ depending on the source consulted. It is located in a closed valley that runs between pastures and eucalyptus plantations, on substrates of slate and greywacke. At its tail, there are well-preserved riverbank formations, with flooded and semi-flooded poplar groves, oleanders and tamujares, which reinforce the natural interest of the site and explain its value as a wetland enclave in an agricultural and livestock farming environment. What can be seen is a wide sheet of water, calm banks and a transitional landscape between the reservoir and the Ardila watercourses. It is of interest for its reading of the territory: it supplies populations and irrigated land in the region, and also supports abundant birdlife associated with aquatic environments, with breeding colonies and winter roosts of ardeids and great cormorant in the riparian vegetation. Its environmental relevance is remarkable because it is included as ZEPA "Embalse de Valuengo" within the Natura 2000 Network, which confirms its importance for the conservation of birds and habitats linked to water. For the visitor, it is a place of serene and functional interest: reservoir, wetland and rural landscape of Extremadura in the same space.
