Cascadas de Tobera
CASCADACascadas de Tobera is a group of waterfalls of the Molinar river in the town of Tobera, a district of Frías, in the Burgos region of Las Merindades. The place is embedded in a gorge carved into limestone rock, where water has been modeling a small natural corridor closely linked to the town and its traditional architecture. The most visible for the visitor are the successive waterfalls, the narrow passage of the river between rocky walls and riverside vegetation, and the picturesque atmosphere created by the surrounding bridges and paths. The usual route is short and accessible, designed to walk along the riverbed and contemplate different points of view of the waterfalls. Its main interest is scenic and recreational, due to the combination of water, rock and vegetation in a very photogenic space. In addition, it is part of the best known routes of Tobera and of the tourist image of Frías, one of the most visited historical sites in the north of Burgos.

Castillo de Frías
CastilloThe Castillo de Frías is a rock fortress located in Frías, Burgos, on the crag of La Muela, dominating the passage of the Ebro and the Tobalina valley. It is a defensive castle integrated into the medieval system of control of access to the city and the strategic environment of the river and roads in the area. Its oldest preserved remains date from the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, although most of what is visible corresponds to the fifteenth century; the set also presents contributions from the sixteenth and earlier centuries. For this reason, its current construction is a mixture of medieval and modern construction phases, with a predominance of the military character typical of Castilian architecture. Among its outstanding heritage elements are the keep, the walled enclosure, the windows with Romanesque capitals and the access system by means of a drawbridge and defensive gate. The keep stands on a rock separated from the rest of the complex, a unique feature that reinforces its status as a rock castle. The castle was part of the high defenses of the medieval city, along with other elements of the hill, and maintained military use for centuries. Today it is a heritage asset of great scenic and historical value, closely linked to the monumental image of Frías.

Chapel of Our Lady of La Hoz
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Hoz is a small chapel or place of worship located in the vicinity of Frías, in the province of Burgos, next to the religious and scenic complex of Tobera and near the Molinar River. Sources indicate its coordinates as 42.74798, -3.30670, in a location closely linked to the heritage trail of the waterfalls and the medieval bridge in the area. According to specialized monument inventories, it is a Romanesque-style building and is protected as a historical heritage site. Tradition and some popular descriptions link it to the 13th century, although for a precise dating, it is best to adhere to the Romanesque period documented in the records consulted. Its heritage value lies primarily in its location and its integration into a small religious complex carved into or set against a rocky, riverine landscape—a feature characteristic of Tobera and its surroundings. The chapel is considered part of the historic landscape of Frías, a medieval town designated as a historic-artistic site, where the religious and defensive heritage forms a highly cohesive tourist destination.

Iglesia de San Vicente Mártir
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of San Vicente Mártir is the main religious temple of Frías, in Burgos, and rises next to the rocky cliff that dominates the town, visually integrated in the medieval historical complex of the old town. It is a parish church, although in some tourist resources it also appears as a hermitage due to its scale and unique location. Its origin is Romanesque, with remains of the original construction preserved after later alterations. The tourist and patrimonial documentation places its first construction in medieval times, and points out that after the collapse of the tower in 1904 a new one was erected. The original main doorway was transferred to the Cloisters Museum in New York, a fact that underlines the artistic relevance that the building came to have. In its interior are preserved outstanding patrimonial elements, such as altarpieces, altars, sepulchers, paintings and religious imagery. Among the aspects most cited by the sources are the chapel of the Visitation and the set of devotional pieces that reinforce its historical and artistic value within the heritage of Frías. The church is part of the monumental landscape of Frías, a fortified medieval town declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973. Its exact location, in the eastern sector of the rocky hill of the town, explains its role within the historic urban core and its interest as a heritage tourist resource.

Church of San Vitores
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of San Vitores is a religious building in Frías (Burgos), identified in tourist sources as a church or chapel and located at coordinates 42.76179, -3.29292. It is a building of significant heritage value within the town’s medieval historic district, known today more as an architectural landmark than as an active place of worship. The earliest known documentary mention dates to 1211, in texts linked to the nearby monastery of Vadillo. The sources consulted indicate that the building has undergone numerous transformations, collapses, and repurposings over time, even serving functions unrelated to worship, such as a grain warehouse. From an architectural standpoint, it retains a simple structure with minimal decoration. Descriptive accounts and heritage records note the presence of a Romanesque bell gable and a Gothic portal, suggesting a medieval evolution incorporating elements from different construction phases. Its value lies both in the antiquity of the site and in its status as a remnant of Frías’s religious history, where the building forms part of the monumental landscape linked to the rocky hill and the town’s medieval development.
