Collegiate Church of Saint Martin of Tours

Collegiate Church of Saint Martin of Tours

Iglesia / Ermita

The Collegiate Church of San Martín de Tours is a collegiate church located in Bonilla de la Sierra, in the province of Ávila, Castile and León. It is part of the town’s historic district and is situated in the Plaza de la Iglesia, very close to the coordinates indicated. It was designated a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931, a precursor to its current status as a Site of Cultural Interest. It is a Gothic-style religious building, constructed in the first half of the 15th century. Regional tourism sources highlight the purity of its walls, the pinnacles, the large windows, and the square tower, as well as its single, well-proportioned nave—features that define its sober and monumental character. Among its most notable heritage elements are the choir, the chapels, and the altarpieces. Also mentioned are a large pointed barrel vault, a chapel with a cross-ribbed and interlaced vault, a Baroque altarpiece, and Gothic paintings, reflecting the artistic richness accumulated in the building over time. Its history is linked to the ecclesiastical influence of Bonilla de la Sierra, a town associated with the bishops of Ávila. The collegiate church was established as part of the town’s late-medieval development, and local records attribute its founding to Cardinal Juan de Carvajal; for this reason, it stands as one of the municipality’s most significant heritage landmarks.

El Berrueco de Bonilla

El Berrueco de Bonilla

NATURAL

El Berrueco de Bonilla is a natural rock formation located in the surroundings of Bonilla de la Sierra, in the province of Avila, in the Corneja valley. It is an isolated relief visible from the village, associated with the mountain landscape of the area, with a position that makes it a topographic landmark of the immediate environment. Its main interest is landscape: it offers wide views over the Corneja valley and the surrounding mountain range, so it works as a natural viewpoint and as a reference point to recognize the structure of the local relief. The coordinates provided place the resource to the west of the urban center of Bonilla de la Sierra, in a rural area of transition between the countryside and the mid-mountains. There is no specific figure of environmental protection for the berrueco itself in the sources consulted, but it is included as an outstanding resource of the municipality in the patrimonial and natural list of Bonilla de la Sierra. Its value lies in combining visible geology, open landscape and territorial reading of the valley, something especially appreciated in short routes, panoramic observation and quiet visit of the rural environment.
