Church of Santa María de Arties
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of Santa María de Arties is a Romanesque parish church located in Arties, in the municipality of Naut Aran (Lleida, Catalonia), within the Val d’Aran and at the coordinates indicated. It is one of the valley’s most significant heritage sites and is listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest according to various tourism and heritage sources consulted. It was built between the 12th and 13th centuries, although the building also incorporates later additions. The architecture is primarily Romanesque, with a basilica-style floor plan featuring three naves and a tripartite apse; some descriptions also note Gothic and Renaissance elements in later phases or in its interior decoration. Among its most notable features are the two doorways—the main one on the north facade with several semicircular arches—and the bell tower. Inside, the Gothic main altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands out in particular; it is considered a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic painting, along with medieval murals and other works of art preserved in the church. The building is linked to the ancient castle of Entresanaigües, next to which it is believed to have originally stood, a fact that reinforces its historical significance within the medieval urban landscape of Arties. Its state of preservation and artistic importance make it one of the most significant churches in the Aranese Romanesque heritage.

Church of Sant Joan de Arties
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of Sant Joan de Arties is a historic religious building located in Arties, in the municipality of Naut Aran, Lleida, within the Val d’Aran. Although its origins are Romanesque, its current form is the result of a 14th-century Gothic reconstruction; some sources specify that the Gothic transformation took place around 1385. It no longer serves as a parish church and is currently used as a venue for temporary exhibitions. It has traditionally been linked to the Order of the Temple and later to the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, which is said to have used it as a guesthouse before it was used for liturgical purposes as a local church. During the 20th century, it was abandoned and used for other purposes until its restoration at the end of that century, when it was restored as a heritage site open to visitors. Architecturally, it is a single-nave church with three apses, divided into four sections. Its bell tower stands out, with a square base and an octagonal upper section—a characteristic feature of Aranese Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The south wall preserves the Gothic portal with pointed arches, now in a state of disrepair, and, as a remnant of the original building, a Romanesque window on the west wall. The complex is also of historical interest because it served as the parish church for the part of the village located to the right of the Garonne River and because it preserves an ancient burial ground, with visible graves along its perimeter. Its heritage value lies in the combination of its medieval origins, Gothic renovation, and subsequent adaptation as a cultural space.

NATURALThe Refugi Rosta d'Arties is not a natural resource, but rather a former mountain lodge and historic inn located in the village of Salardú (municipality of Alto Aran), in the Val d'Aran, Lleida Pyrenees. Built in the 19th century, it was the first inn in the Naut Aran region and a shelter for the first mountaineers, serving as a base for high-mountain routes to the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The building, managed by the Rocher-Ros family since 1979, retains the style of a 19th-century inn while offering modern amenities, and serves as the headquarters for the PyrenMuseu and the Pyrenades Festival. Its historical significance as a starting point for Pyrenean trails and its location next to the Mont Romies forest and the Garonne River make it a cultural landmark for rural tourism in the Catalan Pyrenees. The best time to visit is from June to October, when conditions are ideal for hiking and outdoor activities in the mountainous surroundings.
