House-Palace of Juan Jédler (Fúcares Palace)

House-Palace of Juan Jédler (Fúcares Palace)

Palacio / Casa señorial

The Casa-Palacio de Juan Jédler, also known as Palacio Fúcares, is a 16th century Renaissance manor house located in the historic center of Almagro, in Ciudad Real. Although for a long time it was popularly identified with the Fúcares, municipal and tourist sources indicate that it was actually the residence of Juan Jédler, one of the factors linked to the economic activity of that family in the town. The building presents a sober architecture of Toledo tradition, with brick, rammed earth and masonry. Its current access is from the 17th century and leads to a vestibule with vaults decorated with plasterwork, which leads directly to the main courtyard, one of the most interesting examples of the Almagro Renaissance. Among its outstanding heritage elements are the square courtyard with Tuscan columns and semicircular arches, as well as the spacious rooms with coffered ceilings. Also mentioned are outbuildings with plasterwork and a remarkable staircase, preserved after its rehabilitation. Throughout its history it was a private house, a tenement house, a lace factory and a school. Since 1984 it has housed the Popular University of Almagro, which has allowed it to maintain its cultural use and the visit of part of its patrimonial spaces.

Calatrava Assumption Convent

Calatrava Assumption Convent

Convento / Monasterio

The Convent of the Assumption of Calatrava is a convent-monastery of Almagro, in the province of Ciudad Real, integrated in the historical complex of the town and located outside the old walled enclosure, next to other historical convents of the city. Its coordinates coincide practically with the official location published for the property. Its origin dates back to the first half of the 16th century: construction was ratified in 1524 and continued after several interruptions due to lack of funds, with a decisive contribution by Gutierre de Padilla in 1543 to complete the work. In the patrimonial sources, the church is described as a part that was built first and it is pointed out that the whole responds to a Gothic structure with Renaissance elements. Among its most outstanding elements are the tower, with a rectangular floor plan and a brick bell tower, and the cloister, considered the most interesting part of the complex. The cloister has two levels of classical orders, Plateresque decoration on doors and windows, a sandstone balustrade and a staircase with stone handrails in the Gothic style. The building was declared a Historic Monument in 1851 and is also listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the heritage information consulted. Its relevance is explained by its link to the Order of Calatrava and for being one of the main testimonies of the Renaissance Almagro convent, preserved and visitable as a heritage resource of the first order.

Corral de Comedias

Monumento

The Corral de Comedias de Almagro is a monument and a historic theatrical space located in the Plaza Mayor of Almagro, in Ciudad Real (Castilla-La Mancha), in the urban center of the town and with signposted access for public visitation. It is the only 17th century playhouse that preserves its original architecture intact and maintains a continuous stage use, which makes it an exceptional case within the Spanish theatrical heritage. It was built in 1628 as an inn and comedy house, taking advantage of the courtyard of an old inn, and documentary tradition links it to the Golden Age. In 1955 it was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest / National Monument, after its rediscovery and recovery in the 1950s. Its typology corresponds to that of a baroque playhouse, with a rectangular courtyard and a structure of several heights organized around the scenic space. Among its outstanding heritage elements are the courtyard of comedies, the perimeter galleries and the complete preservation of the original layout of the building, which allows us to understand the functioning of the popular theaters of the seventeenth century. Its value is not only architectural, but also historical and cultural, due to its continuity as a place of representation from its origin to the present day. Within the historic center of Almagro, declared a historic-artistic site, the Corral de Comedias is one of the most recognizable heritage symbols of the town and an essential reference for understanding the relationship between urban planning, theater and social life in the Spain of the Golden Age.

St. Augustine Church

St. Augustine Church

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of San Agustín de Almagro is a baroque temple linked to the former convent of the Augustinian Recollects, today preserved as a visitable heritage space in the historic center of Almagro, Ciudad Real. Its foundation dates back to 1635, from the testamentary legacy of Doña María de Figueroa and the royal decree that authorized the convent and church. It was conceived in the 17th century, although the works were prolonged for decades and still continued in the cloister in 1719. It is a baroque style convent church, considered one of the most representative works of baroque in the province. The original set of the convent disappeared after the disentailment of 1835 and the subsequent demolition, but the church was saved and remained standing thanks to the intervention of the neighbors. Nowadays it is an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1993 and maintains a cultural use in addition to its monumental value. In its interior the baroque decorative richness stands out, especially the mural paintings and the dome, as well as altarpieces and artistic elements preserved after its recovery. The building has been restored and museumized, integrating it into the tourist and exhibition offer of Almagro, with access from the surroundings of the Plaza Mayor and coordinates corresponding to the historic center of the municipality. Its patrimonial relevance is explained both by its architecture and its role in the religious and cultural history of Almagro, where today it functions as one of the most visited monumental spaces and as an occasional venue for cultural activities and the International Classical Theater Festival.

Municipal Museum of Lace and Blonda

Museo

The Municipal Museum of Lace and Blonda is an ethnographic and handicraft museum located in Almagro, in the province of Ciudad Real, closely linked to the local tradition of bobbin lace and blonda. Its location is associated with the Plaza Mayor and the historic environment of the town of Almagro, declared a historic-artistic site, in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha. The museum was created as a public recognition of a craftwork rooted in Almagro and in other municipalities of Campo de Calatrava, a tradition documented for centuries and which reached special relevance in the 19th century, when Almagro became a national reference for lace. The museum was opened in June 2004, with the support of institutions and private donations. Its exhibition discourse covers the techniques of bobbin lace and presents pieces of lace and lace, as well as traditional utensils such as pillows, picaos and bobbin lace. It also preserves samples of trousseau and clothing made with these works, which allows us to understand its value as intangible heritage and as a craft passed down from generation to generation. The Museo Nacional de Artes Escénicas (MNAE) is a state-owned museum of national category, with headquarters in the Palacio de los Maestres de Calatrava, in Almagro (Ciudad Real), at the coordinates indicated above. Its current name was created by Royal Decree in 2024 as heir to the former National Theater Museum, an institution that has been in existence for over a century. Volcanoes of Campo de Calatrava

PARAJE

The area of Volcanes del Campo de Calatrava, in the municipality of Almagro (Ciudad Real), is part of the great volcanic province of Campo de Calatrava, one of the most important areas of recent volcanism in the Iberian Peninsula. In this sector there are volcanic structures, craters and reliefs associated with eruptive episodes developed on a La Mancha plain of great geological and landscape value; regional studies place in the whole region more than 240 volcanic edifices and a volcanic extension of several thousand square kilometers. The Hoya de Cervera, a crater of phreatomagmatic origin, that is, generated by explosions of magma in contact with subway water, stands out especially in the surroundings of Almagro. These forms allow us to clearly recognize how volcanic activity shaped the territory, with circular depressions, eruptive materials and contrasts between the volcanic reliefs and the surrounding agricultural landscape. Due to its scientific and geomorphological interest, the area is considered an authentic natural laboratory to observe the interior volcanism of Castilla-La Mancha. Its interest for visitors lies in the fact that it allows them to interpret, in an area relatively close to the town of Almagro, a unique landscape that is unusual in La Mancha: volcanoes, craters and forms of erosion linked to ancient eruptions. The area is included within the protected area of the Calatrava Volcanic Massif and the territorial recognition linked to the Calatrava Volcanoes Geopark. In addition, Hoya de Cervera was declared a Natural Monument with an area of 284 hectares, which underlines its environmental and geological relevance.
