The Corcolilla and Cañada París Sites: Traces of a Gigantic Past
Travel to the end of the Jurassic Period without leaving the province of Valencia! Alpuente is home to one of the best-preserved paleontological sites in the Valencian Community
Travel to the end of the Jurassic Period without leaving the province of Valencia! Alpuente is home to some of the best-preserved paleontological sites in the Valencian Community: the Cañada París II Site and the Corcolilla Site. These unique sites offer a chance to see the actual traces of the dinosaurs that roamed the Iberian Peninsula millions of years ago.
What you’ll discover in the rock:
On a vast layer of sandstone, two main, parallel tracks running north to south are perfectly preserved:
The Herbivorous Giant: A track over 8 meters long belonging to an enormous sauropod, where between 15 and 17 sets of hand-and-foot prints are clearly visible. There are even isolated prints from even larger specimens!
The Hunter: A track about 6 meters long belonging to a theropod (a medium-sized, bipedal carnivorous dinosaur), consisting of 5 or 6 spectacular tridactyl (three-toed) footprints.
Corcolilla: History in Real Size
This site (the first one discovered in Alpuente!) is the perfect complement to your visit. It features spectacular tracks of large sauropods and a fantastic educational exhibit with life-size replicas that will help you imagine what these giants looked like.
A Site Protected by History
Designated as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC), these sites are a true treasure trove where paleontologists have unearthed amazing fossils: bone remains, crocodile and pterosaur (flying reptiles) teeth, scales from medieval fish, fragments of eggshells, and even coprolites.
