Alpuente's Medieval Gardens: An Islamic Gem Over a Thousand Years Old
The Medieval Gardens of Alpuente: An Islamic Gem Over a Thousand Years Old
Can you imagine walking through a farming landscape that has remained intact for over a millennium? In Alpuente, you can. We invite you to discover a fascinating complex of agricultural terraces from the Islamic era, one of the great living treasures of our municipality where time seems to have simply stood still.
Andalusian Engineering: The Art of Mastering Water
Located on the western slope of Mount San Cristóbal, these orchards are the perfect testament to the level of development achieved by Islamic hydraulic engineering. Their ingenious terraced layout adapts precisely to the terrain’s topography, taking advantage of the contour lines at the aquifer’s source.
What is most astonishing is that, even today, the waters of the Acequia Madre continue to flow freely and irrigate the terraced gardens naturally. More than 1,000 years later, they are still cultivated in exactly the same way, without the need to mechanize the irrigation system.
A Unique Landscape Spanning 9 Hectares
This green oasis stretches over more than 9 hectares, divided into plots ranging from 300 to 500 square meters per garden.
