Vilafamés Historic-Artistic Site

The Historic-Artistic Ensemble of Vilafamés, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the interior of the province of Castellón. The old town stands on a hill crowned by the castle, forming a characteristic urban silhouette that dominates the landscape of the Pla de l'Arc. The urban layout clearly preserves its medieval origin, with narrow, winding streets that climb upwards adapting to the topography of the terrain. The traditional architecture is mostly built with rodeno stone, the characteristic reddish rock of the environment, which provides chromatic unity and personality to the whole. Strolling through the historic center is like walking through an authentic monumental ensemble. In addition to the protected complex itself, the interior of the town conserves several assets declared of Cultural Interest, such as the castle and the medieval walls, the Babiloni-Bardoll House, the coat of arms of the Abbey House or the old defensive tower known as La Torreta. Among its streets are also some of the most emblematic places of the municipality, such as the Roca Grossa, integrated into the urban layout itself, and historic buildings that today coexist with cultural spaces such as the Museu d'Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni (MACVAC). Walking through its streets means discovering one of the most unique medieval sites in the interior of Castellón, where every corner retains the imprint of centuries of history.

Vilafamés Castle

Vilafamés Castle dominates the profile of the municipality from the top of the hill on which the old town sits. Its origin dates back to the Muslim period, when the fortress was part of the defensive network that controlled this inland territory of Castellón. After the Christian conquest in the 13th century, the castle was reformed and adapted to new military and administrative functions. The castle acquired special relevance during the 19th century, in the context of the Carlist Wars, when Vilafamés became a strategic enclave in the confrontations between Carlists and liberals. The fortress was occupied, reinforced and was the scene of several military episodes during these conflicts. Although today the remains of walls, towers and defensive structures are preserved, the whole allows us to understand the importance of this enclave throughout history. From its surroundings you can also get some of the most extensive views of the inland landscape of Castellón, with panoramic views over the Pla de l'Arc and the mountains surrounding the town. Today the castle is one of the most representative heritage elements of Vilafamés and the highlight of the tour of its historical complex, from where the origin and evolution of the town around this medieval fortress can be understood.

Roca Grossa

Roca Grossa

The Roca Grossa is one of the most striking icons of the historic center of Vilafamés. This huge mass of reddish stone, embedded in the middle of the street that ascends to the castle, seems to defy gravity by leaning on the slope of the urban layout itself. It is a large block of rodeno, the characteristic stone of the environment, formed millions of years ago as part of the geological processes that shaped the hill on which the town sits. When the town began to grow in medieval times, the streets and houses were adapted to its presence, integrating it into the urban route instead of removing it. Its size and unique position inevitably generate a sense of wonder among visitors. The rock seems to be balanced on the hillside, giving the impression that it could slide at any moment, which makes it one of the most unique images of the old town. Over time, the Roca Grossa has become one of the great symbols of Vilafamés. Its presence reflects the close relationship between the natural landscape and the architecture of the town, where the rock itself is part of the urban fabric. Today it is one of the most photographed places and an essential stop during the tour of the historic center.

Museum of Contemporary Art Vicente Aguilera Cerni

The Museu d'Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni (MACVAC) is one of the most important cultural spaces in Spain dedicated to contemporary art. Located in the historic center of Vilafamés, the museum occupies the historic Palau del Batle, a Gothic civil building from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries perfectly integrated into the medieval fabric of the municipality. Founded in 1969 by the art critic Vicente Aguilera Cerni, the museum was born with the aim of bringing contemporary art closer to society and creating a space for artistic reflection in a unique heritage environment. Since then it has established itself as a benchmark in the dissemination and study of contemporary art. The museum has about 900 works in its collection, of which about 400 are permanently exhibited in its different rooms. The collection brings together painting, sculpture, graphic works and other artistic disciplines, offering a journey through some of the most relevant currents of art from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Among the artists represented in the collection are internationally renowned names such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Antoni Tàpies and Eduardo Chillida, along with numerous national and international artists. The museum complex has recently expanded with the incorporation of the Abbey House, a building declared an Asset of Cultural Interest granted by the Diputació Provincial de Castelló in 2024, which reinforces the presence of the museum in the historic center. With nearly 1,500 m² of exhibition space, the MACVAC makes Vilafamés a unique cultural destination where historical heritage and contemporary artistic creation coexist in the middle of the medieval town.

Church of the Assumption

Church of the Assumption

The Church of the Assumption of Our Lady is the main religious temple of Vilafamés and one of the most outstanding buildings of its historical complex. Located halfway up the slope of the hill on which the town sits, it is an essential part of the urban landscape of the old town. Its construction began in 1594 following the design of the master of the Seo de Tortosa Martín de Mendoza, and the works were executed by the master Juan Palacios. During the 18th century the temple was enlarged with the construction of the Communion Chapel and a new presbytery, completing these reforms in 1783. Later, in 1806, the dome of the transept was rebuilt. The church has a single nave with transept and chapels between buttresses, covered by a barrel vault with lunettes and decorated with baroque elements. Inside, the main altarpiece from the 17th century, the fresco paintings in the Communion Chapel and various ornamental and ceramic elements of Valencian tradition stand out. Built mainly with stone rodeno, characteristic of the environment, the church reflects the architectural evolution between the end of the Renaissance and the Valencian baroque. Today it is one of the main heritage references of Vilafamés and a key element to understand the historical evolution of the municipality.

The Palau del Batle

POI

The Palau del Batle

The Palau del Batle is one of the most outstanding civil buildings in the historic center of Vilafamés and a magnificent example of Valencian civil Gothic architecture. Built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it was the residence of the batle, the representative of the lordly authority in charge of administering the territory and exercising functions of government and justice. The building has the characteristic structure of the Valencian Gothic palace-houses, organized on several levels: semi-basement, mezzanine, main floor and attic. The complex is articulated around an interior courtyard, a central element of this type of building, and also has a rectangular tower that reinforces its stately character. This building reflects the importance that Vilafamés reached during the Middle Ages and the modern period. Its Gothic architecture is perfectly integrated into the urban fabric of the old town, where the local stone defines the character of the buildings. In 1971 the building was acquired by the Diputació Provincial de Castelló, which carried out its restoration for cultural use. It currently houses the Museu d'Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni (MACVAC), a museum of contemporary art that makes Vilafamés a unique space where historical heritage and contemporary artistic creation coexist in the medieval quarter.

The Church of the Sang, Vilafamés

POI

The Church of the Sang, Vilafamés

Located at the foot of the castle and in front of what was the Casa de la Villa, the Iglesia de la Sang is one of the oldest religious buildings in Vilafamés and the first Christian temple built in the town after the conquest of the thirteenth century. Its origin is linked to the reorganization of the territory under the Order of Montesa, which exercised the lordship of the town for several centuries. The temple has a single rectangular nave, characteristic of the medieval churches of repopulation. One of its most unique elements is the presence of an old cistern located under the building, probably of earlier origin, which was reused as a crypt and is part of the structure of the temple itself. Throughout the centuries the church underwent several transformations. During the baroque period important reforms were carried out that enriched the interior of the building and adapted the space to the new liturgical needs. The Church of La Sang is today a fundamental testimony of the medieval history of Vilafamés and is part of the Historic-Artistic Site declared of Cultural Interest, reflecting the religious and architectural evolution of the municipality from the Middle Ages to modern times.

El Quartijo

POI

El Quartijo

El Quartijo is the oldest urban area of Vilafamés and the primitive nucleus from which the town began to develop. Located at the foot of the castle, this sector preserves the structure of the first inhabited area of the town. The neighborhood was protected by a system of walls that delimited the old town, the first medieval urban area of the municipality. In this area were concentrated some of the oldest buildings of Vilafamés, such as the Casa de la Villa or the Iglesia de la Sang, which reflect the political and religious organization of the town in the first centuries after the Christian conquest. Its narrow streets, with an irregular layout and abundant vegetation maintain the intimate and quiet character of the old medieval enclosures. Strolling through the Quartijo allows you to discover the historical origin of Vilafamés and understand how the first urban settlement was configured around the castle.

Turret

POI

Turret

La Torreta is an old watchtower integrated in the historic center of Vilafamés, located near the parish church and within the medieval enclosure of the town. It is listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) within the Historic-Artistic Site declared in 2005. Its origin is related to the defensive system of the medieval nucleus. These towers were part of the fortified structure that protected the primitive village located around the castle and the Quartijo neighborhood. The oldest urban enclosure was delimited by walls and towers that controlled the accesses and reinforced the defense of the population. La Torreta sits partially on the rock of the hill and has a rectangular floor plan with several heights, a common typology in medieval watchtowers. Over time the building was adapted for residential use, incorporating interior modifications for use as a dwelling. Today it is one of the most representative elements of the old defensive system of Vilafamés and a testimony of the military and urban organization of the medieval town.

Castell shelter

The Abrigo del Castell is one of the most outstanding archaeological sites in the municipality of Vilafamés. Located near the castle, this rocky shelter preserves prehistoric cave paintings that are part of the important set of Levantine art of the Mediterranean arc. The representations, made thousands of years ago by the prehistoric communities that inhabited the area, show mainly human figures and scenes related to daily life, such as hunting activities or the movement of human groups. These images, elaborated with natural pigments on the rock, constitute a valuable testimony of the first artistic and symbolic manifestations of the territory. The Levantine rock art, to which this group belongs, is recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO within the group of rock art manifestations of the Mediterranean arc of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its fragility and the need to guarantee its conservation, the shelter can only be visited through organized guided tours, which protects the paintings and facilitates their correct interpretation. The Abrigo del Castell extends the historical story of Vilafamés far beyond the Middle Ages, showing that this territory was inhabited since prehistoric times and that even then its inhabitants left testimony of their relationship with the landscape through art.

Iberian settlement of Els Estrets - Racó de rata

The Iberian settlement of Els Estrets - Racó de Rata is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the municipality of Vilafamés and allows us to know the presence of Iberian communities in this territory several centuries before the arrival of Rome. The settlement is located in a strategic enclave that took advantage of the natural conditions of the terrain to control the environment and the defense of the village. As in many Iberian settlements in the Mediterranean interior, its location responded both to defensive criteria and to the visual dominance of the natural routes that crossed the territory. Among the preserved elements is a circular tower, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, which was part of the defensive system of the settlement and is one of the most visible testimonies of the site. The archaeological remains allow us to identify the organization of this type of settlement, with living spaces adapted to the topography of the terrain and linked to agricultural, livestock and commercial activities typical of the Iberian culture. The site of Racó de Rata allows us to understand the oldest origins of the settlement in the area around Vilafamés and shows that this territory was already inhabited many centuries before the development of the current medieval center.

Sant Miquel Chapel

The Ermita de Sant Miquel is located about five kilometers from Vilafamés, in the direction of Sant Joan de Moró, located on the slopes of Mount Mollet and in the middle of a natural environment. Access is via a forest track that leads to one of the most emblematic scenic enclaves of the municipality. The construction of the hermitage dates back to 1640 and is linked to the pious foundation of Pere Albella, who stated in his will that part of his assets were to be used for the construction of a hermitage dedicated to San Miguel, patron saint of Vilafamés. In the same document he established that the administration of the place would remain in the hands of the town council. The building has a simple and functional architecture. It consists of two main spaces: the religious part, consisting of a rectangular worship hall with a high choir at the foot and a side sacristy, and an area used as a guest house, where the hermit and the masoveros in charge of the maintenance of the place used to live. The facade stands out for its amplitude and for the porch with arcades that opens towards the esplanade. In front of the complex there is a wide square and, a short distance away, a spring that has been a traditional meeting point for visitors and popular celebrations. The area where the hermitage is located is part of the Paraje Natural Municipal de Sant Miquel, a protected area that combines heritage, nature and tradition in one of the most representative landscapes of Vilafamés.

Escola caragol

A former rural school built in 1931, the Escola del Caragol is today one of the most charming corners of the natural environment of Vilafamés. It is a regular point for hiking routes and an ideal place for families, schools and visitors looking for a different experience: history, landscape and tranquility in the same place. The space also has a zip line and a striking sculpture of a giant bicycle, which has become one of the most photographed elements of the environment. The visit allows visitors to discover what education was like in the rural environment while enjoying a perfect place to disconnect and connect with the essence of the territory. Airfield 442
14
POI

Airfield 442

The 442nd Airfield is a historical vestige of the Spanish Civil War located in the municipality of Vilafamés. This airfield was part of the network of airfields built by the Republican army to support air operations in the Mediterranean front during the conflict. The facility was conceived as a field airfield, adapted to the military needs of the time. These infrastructures used to take advantage of relatively flat and well-communicated terrain, allowing the take-off and landing of aircraft performing defense, reconnaissance and support tasks for frontline operations. Although today there are no large buildings, the site retains part of the configuration of the old airfield and is a significant element of the historical memory of the territory. Its existence allows us to understand the strategic importance that the interior of Castellón had during the Civil War and the role that these airfields played in the organization of the Republican aviation. Currently, Airfield 442 is part of the historical heritage of Vilafamés and expands the historical narrative of the municipality beyond its well-known medieval legacy.
