Riveru Square

For the town of Tazones, the "Riveru" square is perhaps the most important place for its history, since it was the place where the main social and economic development of the town took place. In this environment the whales hunted off the coast were deposited and the work of quartering them for their commercialization was carried out. At the end of the XVlll century an important work was undertaken; a retaining wall, the wadi and a breakwater to facilitate the beaching of boats, as well as the installation of two "Palanques". In addition to a place that served as a point of sale and that the fishermen called "La rula del pesu", since at the same time a scale was placed to weigh the catches. This was the place where the boats were beached and the catch was distributed. When the sailors returned from fishing, the women would wait and the sale would take place in lots, and from here they would go out to sell or barter the fish in the towns of the region. The palanques were used to "Sabordar" (take the boats out of the water) when they returned to land and to "Botar" (throw into the water) when they went out to fish, this work was not only done by the sailors, the whole village participated in it, including women and children. In the 30's another remodeling was carried out to make a breakwater and what are now the premises of the Fishermen's Guild, as well as an "Encascaderu" (oven and bucket) to dye the nets. At the same time, one of the palanques was removed and an electric winch was installed, which is still preserved today.

Route of Charles V

On September 19, 1517, the young Prince Charles of Ghent, who would become King Charles I of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor as Charles V, the most powerful man on earth during the first half of the 16th century, landed in the fishing village of Tazones. On that first trip he arrived from Flanders to take possession of the kingdoms of his grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs. After being received in Tazones, he moved to the town of Villaviciosa, where he spent four days, staying at the Casa de los Hevia, and then continued his route to Valladolid, where he was sworn in as King on February 9, 1518. On his journey between the two towns he was able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes offered by this land, such as the popular hamlets of the towns of Tazones and Villaviciosa, both now declared Historic-Artistic Sites; fishing and agricultural landscapes in which apple trees are the eternal traveling companions, or the unparalleled beauty of the Villaviciosa Estuary, declared a Partial Nature Reserve and considered one of the most biologically rich estuaries in Asturias. This route, just over 11 kilometers long, offers the hiker the possibility of living a unique experience, in which to enjoy the imperial landscapes and feel like "A King" for a day.
