Interpretation Center

Inaugurated in 2003, this center is located in the old warehouse of the industrial complex of the municipality. Its purpose is to show the public the figure of Juan de Goyeneche, one of the most relevant and innovative personalities of the reigns of Charles II and Philip V, promoter of the project that gave rise to Nuevo Baztán, as well as the architectural planning of the place carried out by José de Churriguera, whose main nucleus is the palace and the church, and around them, an urban scheme consisting of squares, houses and factory buildings. The center shows by means of models, explanatory panels and reproductions of objects the industries that developed in this town and its surrounding territory. The exhibition is complemented by an audiovisual that delves into the life of Goyeneche and his architect, Churriguera.

St. Francis Xavier Church

The church was built to give legitimacy as a town to a group of buildings and, so that the new settled population could easily attend mass and receive the sacraments. Originally there was a small chapel inside the Palace but, due to the volume of the existing population, it became necessary to build an external chapel that was placed under the dedication of San Francisco Javier, once again demonstrating its Navarrese character, since San Francisco Javier is of Navarrese origin. The church is therefore very small in appearance, consisting of three naves covered by a barrel vault with lunettes, a well-proportioned transept and rectangular chancel. It will soon be overwhelmed by the growth of the population.

Goyeneche Palace

Designed as the founder's residence, the palace occupies the left side of the front. With a square floor plan, it has two floors. The palace is characterized by its sobriety, alien to everything characteristically defined as "churrigueresque" with hardly any concessions to the ornamental and decorative, except for the sturdy beadings that frame the openings and the decoration that helps to support the main balcony, by force of vegetal scrolls, cut plates and the head of a lion with the heraldic chess of the Baztan Valley between its jaws. The branch that crosses the Main Square to the house located in front of the tower, having exit for the same one, calls the attention. The left side of the complex is closed with a tower crowned with balusters and balls of Herrera characteristics, a personal contribution of Churriguera known for his admiration for the art of Juan de Herrera, builder of the Escorial Monastery. Its square structure seems to guard the entire Palace on the left side and there is no symmetry in the tower with the towers of the temple and those located on the main facade. All this gives an air of solemnity to the church building.

Warehouse Fourth Lot

The Alquería de El Cuarto Lote, also known as Arrabal del Conjuro, dates from 1713, as does the urban complex of Nuevo Baztán, built by the visionary Juan de Goyeneche, royal advisor. The Alquería, with warehouses and well, appears in the first Cadastre of Ensenada. Its thick walls kept the jars of wine that Goyeneche began to make in 1715 cool. In those same walls our wines rest again. Bodega Cuarto Lote, for winemaking, aging, ageing and bottling, is located in buildings built at the beginning of the 18th century and catalogued as historical heritage. It thus takes advantage of the resources of a three-hundred-year-old agricultural complex. Its very wide walls and the old well of running water preserve the temperature of the wines.
