Mirador del Mentidero Street

1. Mirador del Mentidero Street

El Mirador del Mentidero is a picturesque street-viewpoint that gives its name to the lower district of Capileira. Along its route, lined by railings, it offers spectacular views of the Poqueira Ravine, with the villages of Bubión and Pampaneira framed by the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. On clear days, you can even make out the African coast. This street also holds a legendary history: here lived the painter protagonist of the legend of the Tajo del Diablo, adding a touch of mystery to this unique corner of the Alpujarra.
Pedro Antonio de Alarcón House-Museum

2. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón House-Museum

The House-Museum Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, inaugurated in 1972 and restored in 2013, pays tribute to the famous writer from Accija, author of "La Alpujarra. Sixty leagues on horseback preceded by six by stagecoach". Located in an old mansion owned by the municipality, this house also houses the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs, where objects that reflect the traditional way of life of the region are exhibited. The building is also a valuable example of popular Alpujarran architecture, preserving its original essence between wooden beams and whitewashed walls.
Urban area

3. Urban area

Capileira, one of the most emblematic villages of the Alpujarra Granadina, stands out for its history, tradition and privileged location as the southern entrance to the Sierra Nevada National Park. Together with Bubión and Pampaneira, it is part of the Historic-Artistic Site of the Barranco del Poqueira. It is the highest of the three, with almost 1,500 meters of altitude, offering breathtaking views. Its urban center, divided into lower, middle and upper neighborhoods, preserves the Alpujarra architecture, with white houses, streets of Arabic layout and fountains that spring from the Sierra Nevada.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza (XVI century, rebuilt in the XVII century)

4. Church of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza (XVI century, rebuilt in the XVII century)

In the middle district of Capileira stands the church of the Virgen de la Cabeza, a temple rebuilt between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. In its interior stands the image of the Virgin, donated by the Catholic Monarchs in the fifteenth century, and a baroque gilded altarpiece of the seventeenth century. The festival in honor of the patron saint is held the last weekend of April and is repeated in August so that emigrants can attend. The locals decorate the Virgin with fresh flowers and, amidst "little devil" costumes, close the celebration with the traditional and enigmatic "burial of the fox".
