Along the Santillana Coast

By the sea of Santillana

This is a circular coastal route of great scenic value, whose main attraction is the breathtaking views it offers of the Cantabrian coast.

The route starts at the Plaza Mayor in Santillana, heading down Calle de Los Hornos toward the village of Arroyo. We recommend stopping at the Virgen del Terreo Chapel to rest in the shade of the trees.

Further on, from El Portillo, you can see the area’s cliffs, as well as the Puerto Calderón cove, which was used as a port by the Romans. And along that coastline, heading east, you can see Zapera Cove.

Before reaching Ubiarco, it is worth heading to the Santa Justa beach, where the chapel of the same name is located, built in the hollow of an anticline fold. On this stretch, following the signs, you reach Jerrona Cove, from where you can see Las Palomas Cave in the distance.

On the final stretch, we cross an old cart track that once served the old winter pastures of El Cuco, as well as the highest point, El Silo. Following the signs, we arrive at the Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana, bringing the route to a close in the Plaza Mayor.
