Description
The Torreón de San Cristóbal is an archaeological site of Celtiberian character located in Anento, in the province of Zaragoza, on the Aguallueve Valley. It is a quadrangular structure built with large dry-laid ashlars, dated around 200 BC and associated with the visual control of the middle valley of the Jiloca and its immediate surroundings. Its landscape interest lies in its dominant position over the valley, from which a wide panoramic view of the relief of Anento is obtained, marked by limestone, clayey loams and slopes of strong geomorphological personality. This location allows us to understand the relationship between ancient settlement, territorial surveillance and use of the landscape in pre-Roman times. The visit is interesting both for its historical value and for the natural framework in which it is inserted: an archaeological viewpoint from which the configuration of the valley can be clearly read. In the sources consulted, it also appears linked to local tours of the Aguallueve area, which reinforces its role as a heritage landmark in the landscape of Anento.
How to get there
By car: from Anento, follow the local signs to the castle and the Aguallueve valley; a popular reference places the access next to the CV-927, in the surroundings of the village's own heritage route. Parking: parking in the village. Parking: parking in the village; there is no specific parking next to the keep. Path: access on foot by a short path from the town center; the sources do not provide a reliable distance or elevation gain, so it is advisable to assume a short route but with uneven terrain. Footwear: footwear with adherent soles. Footwear: shoes with adherent soles, due to loose stones and possible humidity. Best season: spring and autumn, and first/last hours of the day. Warnings: archaeological ruin without monumental conditioning; extreme caution on edges and avoid rain or mud. Some guidebooks also indicate possible access by vehicle from the road, but the visit on foot is the most common option. The archaeological ruin is not accessible by car.
