The Cabo de Gata Lighthouse stands on the most protruding point of the cape, on a volcanic promontory within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The current construction was inaugurated in 1863 and sits on the former site of the castle of San Francisco de Paula; its tower reaches 18 meters and the light is located about 55 meters above sea level, in an environment of cliffs, salt flats and arid coastline of great scenic value. From the lighthouse viewpoint one of the most recognizable panoramic views of the Almeria coastline is obtained: the Sirens Reef, the volcanic formations of the cape, the coastline towards the Almadraba and, on clear days, the contrast between the sea and the dry and mineral relief of the park. The site functions as a natural balcony over a wind-exposed coastline, with a very open atmosphere and excellent visibility. The whole is integrated in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, which also has protection figures such as Biosphere Reserve, ZEPA, ZEC and ZEPIM. It also appears regularly in guides and routes of the park for its value as a scenic landmark and for being the oldest lighthouse in the province of Almería. The visit is especially recommended at sunset, when the low light highlights the ocher tones of the cape and the sea gains chromatic depth. In spring and autumn the atmosphere is usually more pleasant to stop calmly and walk around.
