Description

The Convent of the Augustinian Nuns of Mirambel is a female convent-monastery located next to the Portal de las Monjas, in the historic center of Mirambel (Teruel), in the Maestrazgo region. The heritage documentation identifies it as the Convent of the Augustinian Hermit Nuns and links it to the medieval fabric of the town, with its main façade opening onto Main Street. It was founded in the 16th century, with documentary reference to 1564, and the architecture of the building is masonry, sober and functional, typical of a convent building of that period. The church attached to the monastic quarters has a single nave, with four bays and a pointed barrel vault roof with lunettes, and preserves Gothic elements such as a pointed arch door and a window of the same language. Among the most outstanding spaces are the church of Santa Catalina, the upper cells and a small side chapel that corresponds to the lower part of the tower of the wall, today used as a sacristy. Mural paintings are also documented in the punishment cell and in the corridor, object of restoration by the Government of Aragon, which reinforces its patrimonial interest. The convent maintained religious activity for more than four centuries; the nuns abandoned it in 1980 and the building was opened to the public in 2016. It is now part of Mirambel's visitable heritage resources and acts as a testimony of the religious and defensive history of the walled enclosure.
