Castillo de Vejer

Vejer Castle is a medieval fortress located in the highest part of Vejer de la Frontera, in the province of Cadiz, and today serves as a heritage resource that can be visited in the historic center. It is a castle of Islamic origin, built between the tenth and eleventh centuries according to the sources consulted, in a strategic location for the visual control of the environment and the defense of the old walled enclosure. In its preserved factory highlights the main door with horseshoe arch, linked to the period of Muslim domination, and several canvases and rectangular towers that are part of the fortified enclosure. The architectural reading of the set responds to a medieval military structure with later historical phases, in which elements of Andalusian tradition and transformations of the Christian era coexist. The castle was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument on June 3, 1931 and is currently recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest. Its heritage value is integrated into the urban landscape of Vejer, one of the most representative historical sites of the region, closely linked to the defensive and urban evolution of the town during the Middle Ages. Although today it has lost its military function, it retains a high historical and monumental interest for its antiquity, its dominant position over the town and the permanence of original defensive features. It is one of the most important heritage landmarks of Vejer de la Frontera and an essential reference to understand its medieval origin.
