Castillo de Zuheros

Castillo de Zuheros

Castillo

The Zuheros Castle is a medieval fortress located in the town of Zuheros, in the province of Cordoba, perched on a steep rock overlooking the town and the landscape of the Subbetica. It is a rock castle of Muslim origin, registered as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the typology of Monument. The sources place it in the period of Islamic domination, with usual reference to the ninth century as the time of construction or first defensive consolidation. Its location makes exceptional use of the topography of the rock, which reinforces its military character and explains the almost impregnable nature of some of its fronts. Historically, it was a square linked to the siege of Ferdinand III and the process of Castilian conquest of the area. Subsequently, the complex underwent transformations and retains the remains of a Renaissance palace, in addition to the main tower, highlighting the keep as one of its most recognizable elements. At present it is presented as a fortress in consolidated ruins, with partial restorations made in the twentieth century. Its heritage interest derives both from its Islamic origin and its historical evolution and its visual integration in one of the most emblematic enclaves of Zuheros.

Cueva de los Murciélagos Ecomuseum - Interpretation Center

Museo

The Cueva de los Murciélagos Ecomuseum is an interpretive museum linked to visits to the Cueva de los Murciélagos cave in Zuheros (Córdoba), located along the CO-6210 highway and within the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. Its purpose is to provide reception, information, and interpretation regarding the natural, cultural, and ethnographic values of the site, as well as to serve as the entry point for tourist visits to the cave. The cave is one of the municipality’s major heritage landmarks due to its archaeological and rupestrian significance. Sources indicate human occupation dating back to the Middle Paleolithic, with remains and artifacts spanning prehistory—notably Neolithic and Chalcolithic cave paintings—as well as human remains and traces from later periods. It is not a historic building from the medieval or modern era, but rather a contemporary museum facility associated with a natural and archaeological site. The cave complex has been protected as a Natural Monument of Andalusia since 2001, with a mixed geological, biotic, and ecocultural classification, and is also listed as a site protected under state legislation governing historical heritage. The information provided about the cave highlights the visitor route and the significance of its galleries and chambers, as well as the role of the ecomuseum as a space for interpreting the site and the landscape of the Sierras Subbéticas. Due to its exact location in Zuheros, at the coordinates indicated, it is one of the municipality’s most significant heritage tourism resources.

Río Bailón Trail

RUTA_CORTA

The Bailón River Trail is a 12-kilometer linear route that runs through the Bailón River Canyon, within the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park and Geopark in Córdoba, Andalusia. The trail winds through the deep valley floor of the canyon beneath steep limestone cliffs, crossing the river several times—though its bed is usually dry—and winds through a humid oak and gall-oak forest known as the “enchanted forest.” The karst landscape is the route’s main attraction, featuring geological formations resulting from the dissolution of limestone, including the Poljé de la Nava de Cabra and the canyon itself—two geological gems of the Geopark. From the viewing point, you can see limestone cliffs, scree slopes, cavities, springs such as Fuenfría, and waterfalls in the Las Chorreras area. The trail is one of the most beautiful and most visited in the Subbética region—a protected area that includes the Geopark—and is featured in reputable hiking guides. The best time to visit is in spring or fall, when temperatures are more pleasant and the vegetation is at its most vibrant, allowing you to avoid the intense summer heat.
