Embalse de Mansilla
PARAJEThe Mansilla Reservoir is a large mountain reservoir linked to the Najerilla River, at the head of the Sistema Ibérico in La Rioja. Although the resource card places it in Viniegra de Abajo as a place that can be visited, the reservoir extends between Mansilla de la Sierra and Villavelayo and has a capacity of 68 hm³ and an approximate surface area of 246 hectares. It is, therefore, an artificial landscape with a strong natural presence, integrated in an environment of high mountains and mountain valleys. The most interesting thing for the visitor is the combination of water, relief and historical memory. From its banks there are wide views of the valley and the mountains, and in periods of low water, the remains of the old village of Mansilla de la Sierra, partially hidden under the reservoir, can be seen. This image, together with the mountain environment, explains its attractiveness as a place for walking and contemplation. The area is important for its landscape value and its functional role in the Ebro basin. The reservoir was built for irrigation, hydroelectric production and supply, making it a key infrastructure as well as a visual landmark of the territory. Its environment is linked to the mountainous nature of Urbión, with mountain and riverside ecosystems that reinforce its interest for a quiet and respectful visit.

Soledad Chapel
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Ermita de la Soledad is a religious chapel located at the southern entrance to Viniegra de Abajo, next to Somera Street and within the town center of this municipality in La Rioja. It is recognized as a small chapel linked to local devotion and forms part of the town’s historical heritage. According to the sources consulted, its coordinates are 42.14994, -2.89021, which confirm its location within the town of Viniegra de Abajo, in La Rioja. The building dates to the 18th century and thus reflects the religious architecture of the late modern period. It is a simple masonry structure with a single nave and a rectangular apse. The roof features a wooden hipped structure, while the apse is covered by a lowered barrel vault. Notable features include the entrance through a semicircular arch protected by a portico and the brick bell gable located above the narthex. Its austere composition and modest scale are characteristic of rural chapels linked to the daily and religious life of small mountain villages such as Viniegra de Abajo. The sources consulted do not indicate a specific stylistic classification beyond its 18th-century chronology and its typology as a traditional chapel; therefore, it should be described as an 18th-century chapel of vernacular construction, an integral part of the local religious heritage of Viniegra de Abajo.

Ermita de Santiago
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Ermita de Santiago is a hermitage or church of minor worship located in Viniegra de Abajo, in La Rioja, within the rural environment of the Alto Najerilla. The resource is precisely located at coordinates 42.15396, -2.89534, in an elevated position with respect to the town center, which reinforces its traditional role as a religious and scenic landmark of the village. From the available documentation, it is a small temple linked to the local devotion to Santiago. A report from 2025 on the restoration of its altarpiece confirms the existence of this altarpiece, an outstanding heritage element of the interior, although it does not provide a complete construction chronology of the building. The localized information does not allow to fix with certainty the century of factory neither to attribute a concrete architectural style to it without incurring in interpretative excess. It is known that the hermitage is part of the religious heritage of Viniegra de Abajo and that it has received recent conservation interventions, which indicates its continuity in use or, at least, its patrimonial relevance for the locality. Its interest lies both in the minor religious architecture of the highlands and in its value as a testimony of the popular religiosity linked to the ancient communities of the Siete Villas.

Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is the parish church of Viniegra de Abajo, in La Rioja, located on Calle de los Huertos, very close to the center of town. Although the site is sometimes referred to generically as a church or chapel, heritage records identify it as the town’s parish church. Its construction dates primarily to the 16th century, with later additions that shaped its current appearance. The building is constructed of ashlar and rough-hewn reddish stone, a material highly characteristic of the area’s traditional architecture and one that gives it its most recognizable exterior color. Among its notable heritage elements are a Romanesque baptismal font, predating the current church, and a Classicist main altarpiece of particular artistic interest. The presence of these pieces attests to the historical continuity of worship in the town and the accumulation of movable assets from different eras. Overall, it is a church with Renaissance roots and subsequent construction phases, forming part of Viniegra de Abajo’s most representative religious heritage and continuing to play a central role in the town’s historical and devotional identity.
