Bolimini Cave

PARAJE

The Bolimini Cave is a natural cave located in the municipality of Vilafamés, in the Plana Alta region (Castellón), in the surroundings of the Bovalar area. According to the speleological documentation consulted, it has an actual length of about 121 meters, a maximum depth of -18.7 meters and a small mouth, with discreet access on a sloping hillside; its development opens in conglomerates, an unusual feature in this type of cavities. Inside, there are two large spaces and a large parietal wash that forms a kind of natural shelter or chapel, where the water from the active zone of the cave is collected. The cave is interesting for its subway morphology as well as for the presence of water and the contrast between the dry and stony exterior and the humid environment of the interior. The immediate surroundings preserve dry Mediterranean vegetation and scrubland, typical of the rural landscape of Vilafamés. The cave also stands out for its cultural and local value: it is mentioned with the historical toponym of Cova de la Bealdona and is linked to traditional uses of the red clay called bol-armeni or bol, from which the popular name Bolimini is derived. In the local memory it is also remembered as a shelter for neighbors during the bombings of the Civil War, a feature that reinforces its heritage interest beyond its geological value.

Sant Miquel Municipal Natural Park

PARAJE

The Paraje Natural Municipal de Sant Miquel is a protected natural area of 43.5 ha located south of the municipality of Vilafamés, in the region of La Plana Alta, province of Castellón. It was declared in 2007 and stands out for combining ecological, scenic and historical-cultural interest in an environment very close to the town center. The site sits on unique geological materials of the Triassic, with dolomites and marly limestones, and retains a well-developed thermo-Mediterranean forest mass. The area is dominated by Aleppo pine formations and other species typical of the Mediterranean landscape, in a framework of gentle relief but very contrasted by the nature of the substrate and the vegetation cover. What most interests the visitor is the tour of its trails, the quality of the landscape and the presence of the Chapel of Sant Miquel, dating from 1640, which provides a remarkable heritage value to the whole. The area is also relevant for its floral and faunal diversity, expressly mentioned in official sources, and for its recreational and leisure use for the municipality. Its protection as a Municipal Natural Site responds to these ecological and landscape values, especially valuable in an anthropized environment. Therefore, Sant Miquel is one of the most representative natural resources of Vilafamés in the local and provincial tourist offer.
