The Museo del Empalao is an ethnographic museum and interpretation center dedicated to explaining the tradition of Los Empalaos de Valverde de la Vera, in Cáceres, in the region of La Vera. It is located at Calle de Mirlos, 23, in a traditional Verata house restored for its current use and linked to the Jewish quarter of the municipality. According to official tourist information, the building was a traditional dwelling whose first documented rehabilitation dates back to 1850, and was rehabilitated again in 2003 to be fitted out as a museum. The municipal project opened to the public in 2002 and is part of the Network of Identity Museums of the Regional Government of Extremadura. The museum tour occupies several rooms of the house and explains the rite of Los Empalaos, one of the most unique manifestations of Easter Valverdeña, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Extremadura. It also incorporates audiovisual resources and a reading of the traditional way of life of the local population. Due to its typology, it is not a monumental architectural monument, but a heritage resource of cultural interpretation that preserves the structure of an old verata house. The Plaza de la Fuente de los Chorros is a historic urban spring located in the center of Valverde de la Vera, integrated into the network of sprinklers that characterizes the town. The most interesting thing for the visitor is its landscape and ethnographic value: the water flows next to the popular architecture of Valverde de la Vera, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, creating a very representative picture of the region of La Vera. The square functions as an orientation landmark and as an example of the relationship between traditional urbanism and the use of water in a mountain village in the foothills of Gredos. Its relevance does not lie in its size, but in the authenticity of the whole: fountain, watering cans and farmhouse are part of a very recognizable local identity in Extremadura. Due to its exact location in the historic center of Valverde de la Vera, it should be distinguished from other water resources in the area, such as the gorges and natural waterfalls in the municipal surroundings.
