C.I. de la Antigua Cárcel de Sepúlveda (Old Prison of Sepúlveda)

C.I. de la Antigua Cárcel de Sepúlveda (Old Prison of Sepúlveda)

Otro

The C.I. de la Antigua Cárcel de Sepúlveda is an interpretation center installed in the old prison of the town, in Sepúlveda (Segovia), next to the wall and in the Plaza del Trigo. It is a heritage resource of historical and informative character, today integrated in the network of Museums of Castilla y León and in the local tourist offer. Construction of the building began in 1543, so its origin dates back to the 16th century. It was born as a municipal or council prison and later became a party prison after the administrative reorganization of 1834. It retained its penitentiary use until the 20th century and, after its rehabilitation, it was adapted to house a permanent exhibition on imprisonment and the history of prisons. Architecturally, the building maintains the image of a historic construction linked to the walled enclosure, with three floors and a direct relationship with the urban defenses of Sepulveda. The sources consulted emphasize that part of the preserved facilities correspond to the prison stage, especially the interior distribution and the spaces associated with its former prison use. Its heritage value lies both in the building itself and in its musealization, which explains the daily life of the inmates, the administration of justice and the social role of historic prisons. It is, therefore, a unique example of civil heritage reused as a cultural and interpretive space.

For its part, the Interpretation Center of the Old Jail functions as a complementary space to visit within the heritage itinerary of Sepúlveda. Combo turístico

Heritage tourism combo composed of three resources of the town of Sepulveda (Segovia): the Museum of the Fueros, the Lope Tablada de Diego Museum and the Interpretation Center of the Old Jail, all linked to the historic center and the municipal cultural offer. It is located around the Plaza del Trigo and the street of the Fueros, in the heart of the historic center of Sepulveda, declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Cave of the Seven Altars

Cave of the Seven Altars

PARAJE

The Cueva de los Siete Altares is a cave and archaeological site located in the municipality of Villaseca, a district of Sepúlveda, in the canyon of the Duratón River, within the area of the Duratón River Gorges. It is located on a limestone outcrop next to the Villaseca bridge and was declared an archaeological site of Cultural Interest in 1994. The complex is small and combines a natural cave with human interventions carved into the rock. Inside there are three niches or altars of Visigothic tradition, as well as other rock remains, an access space and a tomb excavated in front of the altars. Its main interest is historical and archaeological, as it is one of the most unique early Christian testimonies in the province of Segovia. The most characteristic thing that can be appreciated from the outside is the relationship between the excavated shelter and the landscape of the Duratón, with limestone walls cut by the river and an environment of great visual strength. The location reinforces its value as an enclave of hermitage and cave worship, in connection with other heritage landmarks in the Sepulveda canyon. Its current relevance comes from both the official heritage protection and its regular inclusion in cultural and nature itineraries around Sepulveda. The visit to the interior is restricted, so the interest of the place is focused on the contemplation of the whole, its geological context and its historical significance.

San Frutos Chapel

San Frutos Chapel

ERMITA

The Hermitage of San Frutos is an old monastic priory and Romanesque sanctuary located in the Natural Park of the Gorges of the Duratón River, in the surroundings of Sepúlveda, although administratively it is linked to the municipality of Carrascal del Río. The complex stands on one of the great meanders of the Duratón, in a place of great scenic and geological value, and is one of the most visited sites in the park. The usual route to the viewpoint and the hermitage is short, on foot and of low difficulty, with interpretative access from the San Frutos parking lot. What can be seen today is, above all, the preserved temple of the old monastic complex, built in the Romanesque period over a previous occupation of Visigothic tradition. Its isolated silhouette, dominating the canyon, allows us to appreciate the relationship between heritage and relief: deep gorges, limestone cliffs and a wide view over the river valley. The site is of interest both for its religious architecture and for the visual impact of the location, especially for the panoramic view over the meander and the slopes of the natural park. Its cultural relevance is remarkable: it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and a Historic-Artistic Monument since 1931, and is one of the oldest Romanesque temples south of the Duero. In addition, San Frutos is the end of the Camino de San Frutos, a pilgrimage route linked to the Segovian saint. Local tradition attributes the foundation to San Frutos himself and his brothers Valentín and Engracia, although this reference should be understood as a hagiographic tradition.

PARAJE

The Fuente de la Salud is a small natural spring or mineral-medicinal upwelling located in Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia, east of the Santa Cruz neighborhood and in the surroundings of the Duratón river valley. It is interpreted as an upwelling linked to a karst aquifer, which explains its geological and hydrogeological interest, as well as its cultural and ethnographic value. The site is associated with a natural bathing and walking area, with a path in its surroundings to improve accessibility and public use. Due to its location, it combines riverside scenery, the presence of permanent water and proximity to the historic center of Sepúlveda, which makes it a popular stop for visitors looking for a quiet and cool spot in summer. Its interest does not lie in its large dimensions, but in the singular character of the spring and in the relationship between water, relief and traditional uses of the place. The area is part of the landscape area linked to the natural park of the Hoces del Río Duratón, an environment of high environmental and tourist value in which Sepúlveda acts as a gateway and reference center. In addition to its recreational function, the Fuente de la Salud stands out for its educational and informative value as an example of a natural spring in a karstic environment. The recent conditioning actions show that it is a sensitive space, where the aim is to make the visit compatible with the conservation of the environment and the improvement of public use.

Its exact location, in the western sector of the urban area, reinforces its landscape and patrimonial value within one of the most recognized monumental enclaves of Castilla y León. It is a church/hermitage of medieval origin, built in the 12th century. The sources consulted describe it as a Romanesque building, with later medieval extensions, including the portico added in the thirteenth century, also of Romanesque language.
