Castillo de los Adelantados

Castillo

The Castillo de los Adelantados is a medieval fortress in ruins located in Santa Gadea del Cid, province of Burgos, Castilla y León, on a hill overlooking the urban environment and the nearby valley. The town retains a strong defensive character and the castle is part of its historical silhouette, along with the walls and the old town declared of Cultural Interest as a Historic Site. According to the information available, its origin dates back to the Middle Ages and various sources relate it to a 15th century fortification, built on older remains, possibly from the 11th century. It is, therefore, a rocky castle of strategic function, linked to the control of the border territory between Castile, Navarre and Alava. The remains of the keep and the adaptation of the enclosure to the topography of the hill are particularly noteworthy. Some descriptions mention a Gothic vault in the tower, which points to a late medieval construction phase of Gothic character. Today the castle is integrated into the heritage landscape of Santa Gadea del Cid, a medieval village of strong historical interest in the region of La Bureba, and acts as one of the main monumental landmarks of the municipality.

St. Peter the Apostle Church

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is the main parish church of Santa Gadea del Cid, in Burgos, and one of the most outstanding elements of its historical complex. Sobrón Reservoir

Sobrón Reservoir

PARAJE

The Sobrón Reservoir is a reservoir on the Ebro River located in the municipality of Santa Gadea del Cid, in the north of Burgos, near the border with Álava. With the typology of a landscape, it stands out for its embedded relief and the contrast between the rocky slopes and the sheet of water, in a stretch of transition between river landscape and mountainous environment. It is an area of calm waters, associated with a large reservoir and the well-known stretch of the so-called "burgaleses fjords", a local and informative name that alludes to the closed morphology of the valley and its abrupt walls. The area is particularly interesting for its scenic value and for the perception of depth and the channel's confinement, very different from the more open riverside landscapes. Its interest for the visit lies in the combination of natural viewpoints, riverside environment and the presence of fauna linked to the aquatic environment and the nearby cliffs, although the specific biological composition is not detailed in the sources consulted. It is also an attractive resource for observation activities and quiet enjoyment of the environment, with special presence of electric boats in the recreational use of the reservoir. In addition to its scenic function, it is part of the Sobrón area and its surroundings, linked to environmental protection areas in the nearby area of the Basque Country. In the informative guides it appears as one of the most singular natural resources of the municipality due to its image of water and rock landscape.
