Pilón de las Huertas

PARAJE

The Pilón de las Huertas is a traditional fountain located in the town center of San Martín de Trevejo, in the province of Cáceres, Extremadura. It is a stone trough or pillar with crystal-clear, cold, and clean water, set amid the historic architecture of the Sierra de Gata. From the viewing point, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the town, with its cobblestone streets and granite buildings, while cooling off in the fountain’s waters. The site is significant as the endpoint of the SL-CC 208 trail, “Between Rivers and Forests,” which winds through a dense riparian forest of ash, willow, and alder trees and connects to the Ojestos chestnut grove. Although it does not have its own specific protected status, it is located within the Historic-Artistic Complex of San Martín de Trevejo, designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 2024. The best time to visit is at the end of the route, preferably in the fall, when the colors of the chestnut grove and the forest’s humidity are at their most intense, or in the spring, when the water levels are highest.
