Cárcel de la Villa

Cárcel de la Villa

Museo

La Cárcel de la Villa de Pedraza is a historical museum housed in a medieval building located next to the gate of the walled enclosure of Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, Castilla y León. The heritage typology is that of a former prison or stately prison converted into a museum resource, which can be visited by means of a guided tour. The autonomous tourist sources place it in a building of the 13th century, while Segovia Turismo also indicates that it was rebuilt in the 16th century; therefore, it is an architecture of medieval origin with later reforms. Its location at the entrance to the town reinforces its historical function of controlling access to the walled enclosure. Among the documented heritage elements are the two-level dungeons, cells, stocks and shackles used to immobilize prisoners. There are also preserved spaces interpreted as lower dungeons for the most dangerous inmates and upper ones for minor offenders, which allows us to understand the traditional penitentiary organization of the building. The management and opening to the public is attributed to the Villa de Pedraza Foundation, which organizes guided tours and maintains the historical dissemination of the building. In the context of Pedraza, a medieval walled town declared a Historic Site, the Cárcel de la Villa is one of the most representative heritage resources of the urban complex.

Castillo-Museo Zuloaga

Castillo-Museo Zuloaga

Castillo

The Zuloaga Castle-Museum of Pedraza (Segovia) is a private medieval fortress that today functions as a visitable castle and museum linked to the painter Ignacio Zuloaga. It is located in the town of Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, and in tourist sources is associated with the name of Pedraza Castle or Zuloaga Castle and Museum. Its origin dates back to the 13th century, with a rebuilding in the 15th century; the keep dates from that period. In the 16th century the Dukes of Frías, Constables of Castile, reformed the complex and gave it the appearance it retains today. The visible architecture thus responds to a medieval and Renaissance evolution, with successive defensive and residential adaptations. The interior preserves outstanding heritage elements such as the keep, the parade ground and the cistern, as well as a coat of arms of the Herrera family on the staircase leading to the cistern. The relationship with Zuloaga began in 1926, when he acquired the castle, restored one of the towers as a workshop and converted another into an exhibition space. The museum displays works by the painter and, on occasion, pieces from the family's estate, making the complex a unique example of a historic castle reused as a cultural space. The visit allows visitors to understand both the original military function of the fortress and its later artistic and patrimonial value.

Church of St. John the Baptist

Church of St. John the Baptist

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of St. John the Baptist is a parish church in Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, located in the Plaza Mayor of the town’s historic district. It is one of the most representative churches of the local religious heritage and the only one of Pedraza’s ancient churches that remains open for worship. The heritage record identifies it as a parish church, although in some tourist guides it is listed generically as a church or chapel. Its origins are Romanesque, and it was built between the 12th and 13th centuries; other sources trace its foundation back to the 11th century, although the most commonly cited dating in heritage records is the medieval Romanesque period. Of the original building, the tower and the apse—visible from the outside—are particularly well-preserved, while the interior has undergone later renovations that have altered its original appearance. The church displays a strong blend of styles due to its numerous historical transformations, with notable renovations during the Baroque period and a subsequent interior reconfiguration. Available documentation mentions a three-nave floor plan and the preservation of a 13th-century Romanesque baptismal font as a notable piece of liturgical furnishings. In the context of Pedraza, a medieval town designated a Monumental Complex, the church forms part of the historic landscape of the Plaza Mayor and continues to play an active religious role, in addition to its heritage significance. Its value lies both in the remaining Romanesque structure and in the historical interpretation of the renovations, which reflect the church’s evolution over the centuries.

La Velilla Viewpoint

MIRADOR

The Mirador de La Velilla is a natural vantage point situated on a hill on the outskirts of Pedraza, offering an unobstructed panoramic view of the Tierra de Pedraza and its surroundings. Geographically, it sits on gently rolling terrain that culminates in a cliff, ensuring a wide, unobstructed view of the Segovian region’s landscape. From this viewpoint, visitors can see the expanse of fields, the silhouette of Pedraza Castle in the distance, and how the medieval town blends into its natural surroundings in the Sierra Norte de Guadarrama. Its appeal lies in the quality of the views, which allow visitors to appreciate the topography of the region and the historical architecture of Pedraza in context. The viewpoint is part of the network of trails that run through the Sierra Norte de Guadarrama Natural Park, alongside routes such as Las Tongueras and Orejanilla. It does not have its own specific protected status, but its location in an area of natural value makes it a reference point for rural tour guides. The best time to visit is during spring or summer, when the vegetation is at its peak and the daylight allows for clear photographs, especially in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the castle and the valley.
