Área Recreativa de A Fervenza

PARAJE

The A Fervenza Recreational Area is a riverside spot located 2.5–3 km from Mondoñedo, in the parish of Tronceda, next to the Tronceda River, a tributary of the Masma. The area is organized around a narrow riverbed that creates waterfalls, natural pools, and a main river pool—features that account for its scenic appeal and its traditional use as a summer swimming and relaxation spot. The most striking features are the nearby waterfalls, the crystal-clear water, and the pools formed by the channel that diverts water from the river, accompanied by picnic areas with tables—some covered—and barbecue grills. It is a popular spot to spend the day with the family or take a short walk along the river’s immediate surroundings, featuring a landscape of rocks, riparian vegetation, and gentle slopes—all very characteristic of the upper Mindonian basin. The area is included in routes honoring the writer Leiras Pulpeiro, and an old power plant in the vicinity is being restored. The best time to visit is in the spring and early summer, when the water flow is suitable for swimming and recreational activities.

Salto de Coro Waterfall

Salto de Coro Waterfall

CASCADA

Salto do Coro is a vertical waterfall approximately 15 meters high, located on the Coro Stream, a tributary of the Valiñadares River, in the Mondoñedo Valley, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. The water plunges down a very steep drop onto slabs and slate rocks, forming a large natural pool of crystal-clear water, ideal for relaxation and contemplation. The surroundings are dominated by native forests, ferns, and moss, which keep the landscape green even in summer, creating a peaceful and evocative nook in the heart of nature. From the viewing point, you can see the waterfall cascading down the rocky wall of a small ravine, its shape reminiscent of a horse’s tail. The natural pool at the base of the waterfall invites you to dip your feet in and enjoy the tranquility of the place. Salto do Coro is one of Mondoñedo’s most attractive natural attractions, included in the Ruta del Agua (or Auga), a circular trail of about 7 kilometers that starts in the city’s historic center and passes through rural villages, forests, and an old quarry. The waterfall is located along the Camino de Santiago, adding historical and cultural significance to the route. Although the water flow may be low in late summer, the beauty of the waterfall and its surroundings remains remarkable. The best time to visit is during spring or early fall, when the water flow is greater and the landscape is greener. It’s also recommended to visit on days following recent rain, when the waterfall is at its most spectacular.

Catedral de Mondoñedo

Catedral de Mondoñedo

Otro

The Cathedral of Mondoñedo is a basilica cathedral of the Assumption and one of the main heritage monuments of Mondoñedo, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. It is located in the Plaza da Catedral, in the historic center of the town, with coordinates 43º 25' 41.0" N - 7º 21' 46.1" W. Its construction began in 1219 and was consecrated in 1242 by Bishop Martin, so it belongs to the 13th century. The building presents a clear mixture of architectural styles: it preserves the primitive Romanesque façade, incorporates Gothic elements in the transept and the sacristy, and adds Baroque and later reforms in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Among its most outstanding heritage elements are the rectangular floor plan with three naves, the transept, the rectangular ambulatory, the cloister and the façade with two Baroque towers. Inside, the main rococo altarpiece, the mural paintings, the choir, the organs and the cathedral and diocesan museum stand out. It was declared a National Monument in 1902 and is part of the World Heritage linked to the Northern Way of St. James. Its singular profile, of low height and balanced proportions, has earned it the popular nickname of "Kneeling Cathedral".

Cova do Rei Cintolo

Cova do Rei Cintolo

Parque natural / Espacio natural

The Cova do Rei Cintolo is a natural cave and a site of geological and speleological interest located in Mondoñedo, in the province of Lugo, in the parish of Argomoso, between the neighborhoods of Orxal and Supena, very close to the town center. In terms of its type, it is a large limestone cave rather than an architectural monument. Official municipal sources and the Galician Tourism Board agree that it is the largest natural cave in Galicia and the one with the longest known horizontal passageway in the region. Physically, it features a labyrinthine structure with karst-formed galleries, developed in terrain characterized by slate. Official tourist descriptions indicate approximately 6.5 km of explored length, three main levels of galleries, an approximate elevation difference of 75 meters, and notable underground formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, flowstones, and draperies. Groundwater flows through the lower level, feeding interior lakes and a watercourse known as the Celtas River. From a heritage perspective, the Municipality of Mondoñedo notes that the cave is listed by the General Directorate of Heritage as a Paleolithic site, thus combining natural and historical significance. Galicia Tourism also defines it as a unique space where science and legend meet, and highlights its cave fauna, including bats and invertebrates adapted to the subterranean environment. Tourist access is regulated and takes place through guided tours, which must be booked in advance at the Mondoñedo Tourist Office. Its conservation and the need for visitor capacity control confirm the environmental value of the site and its use as a destination for nature tourism and caving.

Printing Museum

Printing Museum

Museo

Printing in Mondoñedo has a long tradition. The first book printed in Mondoñedo dates from 1495; it is *Breve Forma de Confesión* by Alonso de Madrigal, known as “El Tostao,” Bishop of Ávila, and is therefore an incunabulum. Today, only one original copy of this work remains, housed in the library of Braga, Portugal. The museum traces the history of printing from its origins, with a special focus on the last 200 years.
