The Malpaso Bridges are a natural and historic site located in the Bierzo region, between the towns of Molinaseca and Riego de Ambrós, in the province of León. The site consists of two medieval stone bridges, possibly of Roman origin, that span two different streams: the Pequeño Stream (spanned by the Puente Pequeña) and the Grande or Meruelo Stream (spanned by the Puente Grande). These streams converge further downstream to form the Meruelo River. The structures, restored for use by hikers, allow visitors to cross over clear, rushing waters in a wooded setting of poplars, chestnut trees, Pyrenean oak, and holm oak. From the observation point, you can admire the architecture of the bridges as they span the arches that once crossed the waterways, with the constant murmur of the currents beneath them. The landscape offers partial views of the Olla del Bierzo and an atmosphere evocative of antiquity, linked to the Old Pilgrims’ Way to Santiago that once ran along this path. The site’s significance includes its implicit protected status as part of the cultural route of the Camino de Santiago, as well as local legends about anti-Franco guerrillas (maquis) who took refuge in the area during the Civil War, with accounts of murders that took place on one of the bridges. The trail leading to Las Puentes de Malpaso is featured in reputable hiking guides for Castile and León and in tourist publications about El Bierzo, noted for its low-to-medium difficulty and the constant presence of water along the way. The best time to visit is during spring or fall, when the water flows most abundantly and the forest displays intense colors; it’s best to avoid the height of summer if there is a drought. The morning or afternoon light particularly highlights the stone arches and the reflection on the water.
