Sombrerico Cove

PARAJE

Cala del Sombrerico is an unspoiled coastal area located in Mojácar, in the province of Almería, Andalusia, stretching along a stretch of coastline approximately 1,000 meters long and 60 meters wide on average. Its landscape combines volcanic rock and medium-grained, grayish sand, forming a sheltered cove of special environmental significance. The waters are crystal-clear, calm, and clean, ideal for activities such as diving, scuba diving, and snorkeling, thanks to the diversity of marine flora and fauna found in the area. From the viewing point, you can see cliffs on the southern side of the cove, with shapes eroded by the sea, and a visual contrast between the dark rock and the grayish sand. The cove is designated as a specially protected area where naturism is permitted, and visitors are asked to show the utmost respect for the environment. It has no beach facilities, except for trash cans and a cleanup service, thus preserving its natural and secluded character. Cala del Sombrerico has served as a film location on several occasions, including the movie Treasure Island, starring Orson Welles, and the TV series Curro Jiménez, which adds historical significance to the area. Its name comes from a rock that resembles a hat resting on the water. The best time to visit is in the spring or early fall, or during the first and last hours of the day, when there are few visitors and the light is ideal for taking in the scenery.

Granatilla Cove

PARAJE

Cala Granatilla is an unspoiled cove located at the southwestern tip of the municipality of Mojácar, in the province of Almería, Andalusia. It is located at the mouth of the Granatilla ravine, practically bordering the Cabo de Gata–Níjar Natural Park, although outside its official boundaries. The cove features a mix of dark sand, gravel, and volcanic rock, with crystal-clear waters and moderate waves, making it ideal for snorkeling and peaceful swimming. It is approximately 500 meters long and 50 meters wide, with a seabed of dark sand and gravel. From the observation point, visitors can see the fractures of the Carboneras Fault System, with intensely colored lithological variations, as well as the ravine’s vegetation: fig trees, oleanders, and carob trees. The cove is designated as a naturist area, which guarantees an environment free of services, facilities, and overcrowding, and requires special respect for the environment. Lighting fires and bringing animals are not permitted. The cove is mentioned in Almería beach guides and Mojácar tourist publications as an area of natural and scenic beauty. The best time to visit is first thing in the morning (before 10:00 a.m.) or after 6:00 p.m., especially from June through September, when water temperatures are ideal and the weather is perfect for coastal walks.

Church of Santa María

Church of Santa María

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of Santa María de Mojácar is a parish church built in the style of a fortress, located in the upper part of Mojácar’s historic district, in the province of Almería, next to the Plaza de la Iglesia. The site corresponds to the indicated coordinates and is one of the municipality’s most recognizable heritage landmarks. It was designated a Site of Cultural Interest as a Monument, and local sources also refer to it as a Monument of Cultural Interest. It was built around 1560, at the end of the 16th century, under the direction of master builder Sebastián Segura. The sources consulted describe it as a Renaissance-style building, erected on the site of the former main mosque, during a period of transition between Islamic and Christian Mojácar. The church stands out for its defensive nature, characteristic of a fortress-church built in response to coastal insecurity. It features masonry walls with large ashlars, few openings, and a square-plan tower—features that reinforce its austere and militarized appearance. Inside, heritage guides describe a single nave, a coffered ceiling or wooden truss, and a 16th-century altar. Notable among the documented elements are the two facades, the tower—restored in modern times—and the presence of devotional images linked to local patron saints, such as the Virgin of the Rosary and Saint Augustine. The complex encapsulates the historical, religious, and defensive significance of this church in the urban and symbolic development of Mojácar.

Macenas Beach

Macenas Beach

PARAJE

Macenas Beach is a coastal spot in the municipality of Mojacar, on the coast of Almeria, located next to the environment of the old defense tower of Macenas. It is a beach of gray or dark sand, medium grain, with about 500-600 meters long and about 40-50 meters wide according to municipal and tourist descriptions consulted. Its main interest is landscape: it combines the open sea front with the low coastal relief and the passage to coves and less urbanized stretches of the coast of Mojácar. The beach is also associated with the tower of Macenas, built in the eighteenth century during the reign of Charles III as a defensive element of the Almeria coastline. For the visitor, it offers a quiet bathing area with a more peaceful atmosphere than other beaches of the municipality, with generally clean waters and sandy bottom. It is also a useful access point for touring the nearby coastal stretch and appreciate the transition between beach, wadi and rocky coast in one of the most recognizable sectors of the Levante Almeriense. Its local relevance is not only recreational: it is part of the historical and coastal image of Mojácar, and the tower of Macenas acts as a heritage and visual landmark of the place.
