Church of Our Lady of the Assumption
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is a religious building in Mogrovejo, in the municipality of Camaleño (Cantabria), located in the historic center of this town in the Liébana Valley. It is a parish church, although some tourist guides list it generically as a church or chapel. Its location is part of the Mogrovejo heritage complex, designated a Site of Cultural Interest as a Historic-Artistic Site. According to the heritage record consulted, the building dates to the 17th century and is an example of modern-era Cantabrian rural religious architecture. The building features a sober and functional design, typical of the region’s mountain parish churches, though the sources consulted do not provide a more precise stylistic classification for its main structure. Notable among the documented heritage elements is a remarkable 18th-century Salomonical altarpiece, featuring the image of Saint Toribio in the attic. It also preserves a 15th-century Flemish carving of the Virgin of Sorrows, considered one of the most valuable pieces of religious imagery in Cantabria. The church forms part of the historic landscape of Mogrovejo, a traditional village in the Liébana Valley closely linked to the region’s vernacular architecture and monumental heritage. Its tourist appeal lies as much in its religious significance as in its artistic content and its integration into the village’s historic setting.

Rural School Museum
MuseoThe Mogrovejo Rural School Museum is an ethnographic and educational museum located in the former school buildings of the village of Mogrovejo, in the municipality of Camaleño, Cantabria, in the Liébana Valley, within the historic setting of the Mogrovejo complex. Its location coincides with the traditional center of the village, at the foot of the Picos de Europa, and is linked to the region’s educational heritage. The exhibition focuses on the rural schools of Liébana, particularly the one-room schools, with the aim of rescuing the school life of previous generations from oblivion. According to the sources consulted, the project was promoted by the Association of Friends of the Liébana Region and is funded by the municipality; it is presented as a space for interpreting rural education, featuring audiovisual materials and a recreation of a traditional classroom. The museum occupies two exhibition spaces: a reception room with audiovisual material and a permanent exhibition featuring wooden desks, a blackboard, maps, and historical school objects. These elements allow for a documented reconstruction of how the region’s schools operated and the role of teachers and students in a context of scarce resources. The sources consulted do not document the museum’s specific construction date, as its heritage value lies in its location within the village’s former schools and in its museum collection. The building is part of the historic landscape of Mogrovejo, a town designated a Historic-Artistic Site, meaning the museum is integrated into a rural heritage setting of great interest.

Río Deva
NATURALThe Deva River is a natural river course associated with the basin of the same name and the Natura 2000 Network of Cantabria. In this area, the Deva River SCI also includes sections of other rivers and streams in the basin, and stands out for its high landscape value, its well-represented gallery forests and the presence of habitats and fauna of community interest. The Deva river basin is one of the most important in western Cantabria and has a recognized environmental quality. In the surroundings of Mogrovejo, the resource is understood as a fluvial mountain landscape, linked to a valley of strong natural and visual interest. Although the data sheet consulted does not provide a specific measurement of the stretch at this point, it does place the river within a broad system that vertebrates the territory of Liébana and connects riverside areas, meadows and mountain slopes. For the visitor, the main attraction is in the reading of the landscape: flowing water, riverside vegetation and an environment of strong contrast between the riverbed and the nearby relief. Its interest is not only recreational, but also ecological and territorial. The area has been included in the Natura 2000 Network since 2004 and is mentioned as a salmon basin, which reinforces its environmental relevance. In local tourist guides and resources it is also described as a river with accessible stretches for walks and outdoor activities, although the most solid information comes from its protection status and the natural values associated with the SCI.
