Mirambel Castle

Mirambel Castle

Castillo

The **Mirambel Castle** is the oldest part of the town. It was built by the Order of the Temple in the middle of the 13th century and later reformed by the San Juanists. In the 19th century it was transformed into a house and was demolished in the 1950's. Of its remains, the old oven, masonry and adobe walls, and pointed access arches can still be visited.

Convent of the Augustinian Nuns

Convent of the Augustinian Nuns

Convento / Monasterio

The Convent of the Augustinian Nuns of Mirambel is a female convent-monastery located next to the Portal de las Monjas, in the historic center of Mirambel (Teruel), in the Maestrazgo region. The heritage documentation identifies it as the Convent of the Augustinian Hermit Nuns and links it to the medieval fabric of the town, with its main façade opening onto Main Street. It was founded in the 16th century, with documentary reference to 1564, and the architecture of the building is masonry, sober and functional, typical of a convent building of that period. The church attached to the monastic quarters has a single nave, with four bays and a pointed barrel vault roof with lunettes, and preserves Gothic elements such as a pointed arch door and a window of the same language. Among the most outstanding spaces are the church of Santa Catalina, the upper cells and a small side chapel that corresponds to the lower part of the tower of the wall, today used as a sacristy. Mural paintings are also documented in the punishment cell and in the corridor, object of restoration by the Government of Aragon, which reinforces its patrimonial interest. The convent maintained religious activity for more than four centuries; the nuns abandoned it in 1980 and the building was opened to the public in 2016. It is now part of Mirambel's visitable heritage resources and acts as a testimony of the religious and defensive history of the walled enclosure.

Hermitage of San Martín

Hermitage of San Martín

Iglesia / Ermita

The **hermitage of San Martín**, located to the south of Mirambel, is an outstanding example of a hermitage-sanctuary. It has a rectangular floor plan with three naves and a transept, and although it has a sober image on the outside, it preserves original baroque paintings and stuccoes on the inside. Next to the facade there is an old two-story farmhouse, today converted into a farmhouse, which originally served as the headquarters of the Council during the two annual days in which the traditional pilgrimage was celebrated in the chapel.

Rambla de Cantavieja

PARAJE

The Rambla de Cantavieja is a natural place of fluvial and geomorphological character located in the term of Mirambel, in the region of the Maestrazgo of Teruel. It is a seasonal watercourse or wadi, linked to a landscape of slopes, ravines and rock shaped by erosion, in the surroundings of the mountain of San Cristóbal and in the vicinity of the riverbed that flows into the Bergantes river. The most interesting thing for the visitor is the reading of the landscape: the water lace, the singular geological forms and the environment of half mountain typical of the Maestrazgo, with paths that allow to cross the environment without losing sight of the historical hamlet of Mirambel. The reference to the access by trails of the Maestrazgo Cultural Park places this place within a territory especially associated with hiking and natural and cultural heritage. Its relevance is not in large dimensions, but in the scenic and didactic value of the whole, very representative of the relief of the mountains of Teruel. In addition, the proximity to a village declared one of the most unique of Aragon reinforces its interest as a complement to visit for those seeking nature, heritage and landscape in the same route.

Trail to La Cuba

RUTA_CORTA

The Sendero a La Cuba is a short marked hiking trail that links Mirambel with the neighboring town of La Cuba, in the territory of Maestrazgo Teruel. It is a linear route integrated in the network of paths of the area, with an approximate length of 5.2 km and medium difficulty, suitable for a short outing between villages in the interior of Teruel. The main interest of the itinerary lies in the transitional landscape between the two nuclei: a rural environment of mountains, gentle hills and open views, with the sober and little altered character of the Maestrazgo. Along the way, the silence of the natural environment, the traditional relationship between roads, fields and small towns, and the arrival at Mirambel, a medieval village of remarkable heritage value, can be enjoyed. The route is especially interesting for combining walking and reading of the territory: it connects two historic villages and allows us to understand the dispersed structure of the rural habitat of this region. Its signage facilitates recreational use and reinforces its role as a low-demanding itinerary for visitors seeking nature and heritage in the same excursion.

Guided tour Mirambel

Oficina de turismo

The **urban center of Mirambel** is one of the best preserved medieval ensembles in Spain, recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site and awarded with Europa Nostra in 1982. In just 4 hectares it preserves more than thirty heritage elements, such as walls, portals, towers, churches, convents, palaces and popular houses. Its main singularity is that the entire population is developed within the walls, maintaining an image virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. The nucleus is organized around the old castle, the church, the main street and the walled enclosure, with five access gates, including the portal of the Nuns. The architecture and historical context of Mirambel can be seen at the Maestrazgo Architecture Interpretation Center, where its constructive characteristics and heritage value are explained.
