The Municipal Public Library of Llerena Arturo Gazul is a cultural facility and public library located in Llerena, province of Badajoz, on Santiago Street, next to the church of Santiago and at the coordinates indicated. The building occupies the former chapel of the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, one of the historical pieces linked to hospital care in the town. The building preserves a baroque style façade and an arcaded courtyard with four galleries, features that make it unique within the historic center of Llerena. The construction dates back to 1759, so the building is from the 18th century and is related to the late baroque architecture of institutional and religious character. Its heritage interest lies not only in its current use as a municipal library, but in the reuse of a historic building preserved and adapted for public service. This continuity of use helps to keep visible the memory of the old Hospital de San Juan de Dios and its chapel, integrating them into the contemporary cultural life of the city. Because of its location, typology and preserved elements, it constitutes a heritage tourism resource of local interest in the historic center of Llerena, especially because of the combination of architectural value, care history and current cultural function.

Capilla de San Juan

Capilla de San Juan

Iglesia / Ermita

The Chapel of San Juan is a religious heritage resource in Llerena (Badajoz), identified in local tourist inventories as a historic chapel that can be visited in the town center, located at coordinates 38.23769, -6.01631. In practice, the enclave is related to the minor religious architecture of the town and its dense monumental heritage linked to the historical development of Llerena as an important urban center in the southern countryside. In the tourist and patrimonial documentation consulted, it appears associated with the area of the historical hermitages/chapels of Llerena, although the sources provided do not offer with unequivocal precision its own chronology or a closed stylistic ascription for this specific resource. Therefore, it should be described with caution as a historical chapel or hermitage integrated in the old town, without forcing a dating that is not clearly verified in the available sources. Its patrimonial interest derives from being part of the historical complex of Llerena, declared a historic-artistic site, a nucleus with religious, civil and conventual architecture of great relevance in Extremadura. The Chapel of San Juan, by its location and monumental character, participates of that urban historical landscape in which temples, squares and buildings linked to the medieval and modern evolution of the town are concentrated. If it is used as a tourist information sheet, the most certain fact is its condition of historical chapel/hermitage in Llerena, with value as a piece of the local religious heritage. The specific architectural elements, century of origin and style should be confirmed in a specific official record before incorporating them as definitive.

La Albuera Lake

PARAJE

La Albuera Lake is part of the endorheic lagoon complex of La Albuera, a seasonal wetland of the Tierra de Barros-Tierra de Badajoz plain, fed mainly by rainfall and not by permanent river courses. The complex is formed by several natural lagoons and artificial ponds, in a landscape of very flat relief, with continental soils and a mosaic of shallow waters, vegetation edges and open spaces of interest for aquatic and steppe fauna. From the point of view of the visitor, the main attraction is the reading of the landscape: shallow sheets of water, birds linked to wetlands, banks of low vegetation and the feeling of open space typical of these Extremadura plains. Depending on the specific area and the season, the lagoon can look very different, from large bodies of water after the rains to smaller areas in dry periods. The enclave is included in the lagoon complex of La Albuera, recognized as a wetland of international importance and protected within the Natura 2000 network, with figures such as ZEPA and ZEC. It is also cited as the most important endorheic wetland in Extremadura, with strong interest for bird watching and interpretation of saline and temporary ecosystems. The best time to visit it is usually after the rains and in the cool months, when the water is maintained and ornithological activity is greater. In summer, the level can drop significantly and the landscape changes rapidly.

Museo Histórico de Llerena

Museo Histórico de Llerena

Museo

The Historical Museum of Llerena is a local historical museum located in Llerena, Badajoz, in Zapatería Street, 5, inside the historical center of the town and in the indicated coordinates. The building that houses it was the old Episcopal Palace or Priory House, a construction of the late fifteenth century or last third of the fifteenth century, linked to the stage in which Llerena was the capital of the diocese and residence of the prior of San Marcos de León. For its architecture, the source describes it as a building of Mudejar tradition, with presence of Renaissance elements; it also mentions preserved and recovered mural paintings, dated between the end of the 15th century and the 18th century. Inside the building there are also spaces and heritage features associated with its institutional past, such as the Mudejar courtyard, which reinforce the historical value of the complex. The building was later used as the first seat of the Court of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Llerena at the beginning of the 16th century. This historical trajectory explains why the museum combines the reading of the building itself with the interpretation of local history, making it one of the most significant heritage resources of the city. Its rooms display collections and exhibits on Extremaduran crafts, traditional instruments and units of measurement, works by Vicente Juliá, miniatures, urban themes of Llerena and other historical and ethnographic pieces. The ensemble offers a broad view of the material and cultural memory of Llerena and its evolution over several centuries.
