Portal de Abajo · Linares de Mora

POI

The Portal de Abajo, also known as the Portal de la Fuente, is one of the three gateways that remain from the old walled enclosure of Linares de Mora. It also served as the main entrance to the fortified enclosure and is located across from the fountain that gives it its name. It connected the lower part of the town center—around Arzobispo, Temprado, and Baja streets—with the area outside the walls and with the surroundings of the Plaza de la Villa and the former Town Hall buildings. Its alternative name, Portal de la Fuente, comes from its location in front of the fountain. Nearby, there are also features related to the traditional use of water, such as the washhouse. The most distinctive feature of the gate is precisely the combination of medieval defensive architecture and domestic architecture: the old gate in the city wall continues to serve as a passageway, while a traditional dwelling stands above it. It is a good example of how the defensive structures of Linares de Mora were gradually incorporated into the village.
