Santa Bárbara Castle in La Fresneda · La Fresneda

POI

Perched atop a rocky promontory stand the ruins of Santa Bárbara Castle, a medieval fortress that dominated the territory of La Fresneda for centuries. Reconquered in 1169 and later incorporated into the Order of Calatrava, it played an important strategic role in various historical conflicts, from the War of Succession to the Carlist Wars. Although only part of a tower, the entrance, and some sections of the wall remain today, the site offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding area and provides a glimpse into one of the most notable examples of the Matarraña region’s defensive past. Furthermore, it has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) since 2006.
