Cabo Vidio

Cabo Vidio

NATURAL

Cabo Vidio is a geographical feature of the coast of Cudillero, in the parish of Oviñana, formed by a large coastal ledge with cliffs that exceed 100 meters high in some sections. It is located in front of the Bay of Biscay, in a very prominent point of the western coast of Asturias, next to the lighthouse of Cabo Vidio, which acts as a visual and scenic reference of the environment. The most striking feature of the place are its open views over the cliff line, the sea and the small coves and inlets of the coast. From the viewpoint you get a wide panoramic view of the coast, especially appreciated at sunset. Also noteworthy is the Iglesiona, a marine cavity modeled by wave erosion, which can be seen at low tide and summarizes well the dynamic character of this stretch of coastline. Its interest is not only scenic: all this strip is part of the Protected Landscape of the West Coast, a figure of protection that underlines its environmental and geological value. Cabo Vidio is one of the best known natural points of the council of Cudillero and appears regularly in the tourist guides of Asturias for the combination of cliffs, lighthouse, coastal geology and seascape.

Cascada Gorgollón

CASCADA

The Gorgollón Waterfall, also popularly known as “el Mechón de la Xana,” is a natural waterfall located in the Faedo Valley, within the municipality of Cudillero, in the Principality of Asturias. Physically, it is a low-altitude mountain waterfall or a waterfall in a narrow valley, set within the humid, forested landscape of the Cudillero interior—an area better known for its coastal beaches. The waterfall pools into a small pond, and its surroundings are dominated by the dense vegetation typical of the region’s Atlantic forests. From the viewing point, visitors can see the waterfall framed by the vegetation, just behind the Molino de Pin, a perfectly preserved stone structure that adds historical and cultural value to the site. The mill, which once harnessed the stream to power its millstone, is located just a few meters from the waterfall, and the channels that fed the millstone can be followed upstream to reach the top of the cascade. The combination of water, the forest, and the old mill creates an evocative and peaceful setting, ideal for those who enjoy the mountains and waterfalls in a less crowded environment. Although it does not have a specific protected status noted in the sources consulted, the trail to the Gorgollón Waterfall is mentioned in reputable hiking guides and on active tourism platforms in Asturias, such as Vivir Asturias and Asturias Turismo. Its local significance is also linked to the legend or popular name “Mechón de la Xana,” which suggests a connection to Asturian mythological traditions involving the xanas, female beings of the water and the forests. The trail is short, easy, and well-marked, making it accessible to all types of visitors, including families with children. The best time to visit the Gorgollón Waterfall depends on river conditions and the light in the forest. Spring and fall typically offer a greater flow of water and more intense colors in the vegetation. As for the time of day, the early morning or late afternoon provide softer light that highlights the texture of the water and the millstone, avoiding the dense shadows that can cover the valley during the middle of the day.

la Concha de Artedo Beach

la Concha de Artedo Beach

PARAJE

La Concha de Artedo Beach is a coastal spot in the council of Cudillero, in Asturias, located on the western Cantabrian coast, next to Lamuño and San Martín de Luiña, around the coordinates 43.56762, -6.19198. It is a shell-shaped beach, with a length quoted in municipal and informative sources of between 680 and 760 meters, and an average width of approximately 55 meters. Its most visible feature is the alternation of boulders in the upper part and golden sand at low tide, with moderate waves and a natural shelter provided by the surrounding headlands and cliffs. The Uncín river also flows into it, coming from the brañas vaqueiras, which adds scenic interest and a small estuarine component to the whole. The beach is interesting for its width, for the contrast between high and low tide, and for being one of the most recognizable beaches in the council, with road access and seasonal services. The sources consulted place it within the Protected Landscape of the Western Coast and also link it with protection figures such as ZEPA and LIC, which reinforces its environmental relevance. The municipal information includes parking, signposted accesses and summer lifeguards, as well as intensive use in summer. Silencio Beach

Silencio Beach

PARAJE

Playa del Silencio is a coastal spot in Cudillero, in the parish of Novellana and the surroundings of Castañeras, on the western coast of Asturias. It is a natural beach of pebbles and rock, also known as Playa d'El Gavieiru, wedged between quartzite cliffs that give it the appearance of an amphitheater open to the Bay of Biscay. Its length is around 500 meters, although the useful aspect varies with the tide. The most striking thing is its strong landscape and geomorphological value: a secluded cove, without immediate urbanization or direct road access to the sand, which retains a very little altered image. From the viewpoint and the access path you can see the shell-shaped beach, the rocky wall that protects it and the contrast between the sea, the boulders and the coastal vegetation. The interest of the visit is in the whole: abrupt coastal landscape, calm atmosphere and clear reading of the marine processes and the modeling of the cliffs. It is an enclave very cited in guides and tourist information of Asturias for its scenic beauty and for representing in a very clear way the Cantabrian coast of the western area. In addition, the environment is included in the protected areas of western Asturias, which reinforces its environmental relevance. Because of its access on foot, its character of virgin beach and its great visual value, it is one of the most representative natural resources of the council of Cudillero.
