Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián

Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián

Iglesia / Ermita

The Collegiate Church of San Cosme and San Damián is the main parish church of Covarrubias (Burgos), traditionally known as collegiate church by the former ecclesiastical dignity that had the temple. It is a religious monument of great patrimonial relevance in the town, declared of Cultural Interest in 1931. The present building is, for the most part, 15th century Gothic, although the sources indicate that construction probably began in the 14th century and was completed around 1476. On the same site there were earlier temples, first a 12th century Romanesque church and, according to tradition, an older Visigothic church. Among its most outstanding elements are the 16th century cloister, added later to the main temple, and the museum of sacred art installed in the complex. It also preserves remains of earlier construction phases, which allows us to read in the building the historical evolution of the place since medieval times. Its historical value is linked to the religious and stately development of Covarrubias, one of the most important enclaves of Burgos Arlanza. The collegiate church summarizes in a single monument the continuity of worship, the Castilian Gothic architecture and later Renaissance extensions.

St. Olav's Hermitage

St. Olav's Hermitage

Iglesia / Ermita

The Hermitage of San Olav is a contemporary hermitage located in the Valle de los Lobos, in Covarrubias (Burgos), conceived as a religious and exhibition space linked to the figure of St. Olav and the historical memory of Princess Kristina of Norway. The official tourist and reference sources describe it as the first hermitage built in Spain in the 21st century. It is a modern work built in steel, metal and wood, with a unique architecture designed to integrate into the landscape and also to function as a place of cultural interpretation. Inside, it incorporates a museum dedicated to the life of Saint Olav -warrior, king and saint- and to the historical episode that links Norway with Covarrubias. It is not a medieval temple, but a recent heritage resource associated with cultural tourism in the municipality. Its location, a short distance from the historic center, reinforces the heritage tour of Covarrubias and complements other landmarks of the local historical complex, especially the former collegiate church of San Cosme and San Damián, where the memory of Princess Kristina is preserved. The chapel was promoted from an architectural competition promoted locally and in Norway, and has established itself as a unique element of the tourist heritage of Covarrubias for its symbolism, its design and its relationship with the shared history between Burgos and Norway.

Sabinares del Arlanza Natural Park - La Yecla

NATURAL

Protected natural area in the southeast of the province of Burgos, within the municipality of Covarrubias, integrated in the Sabinares del Arlanza-La Yecla Natural Park. The park occupies some 39,173 hectares and was declared in 2020, making it one of the last large protected areas recognized in Castilla y León. Its relevance is supported by a mosaic of canyons and limestone escarpments, embedded valleys and well-preserved forest masses. In this sector of the Arlanza, the savin juniper groves stand out, considered among the most extensive and best preserved in the world, accompanied by holm oak groves, gall oak groves, oak groves and riparian forest around the Arlanza river. The landscape combines mid-mountain and abrupt formations shaped by erosion, with a strong presence of limestone rock that gives rise to gorges, cliffs and natural caves. For the visitor, the main interest lies in the variety of the relief and in the reading of the landscape: from the viewpoints and trails you can appreciate the mature juniper groves, the stony slopes and the cliffs where large birds of prey nest. The area is also part of one of the best known enclaves of the region of Covarrubias for its scenic value and proximity to hiking and nature trails. Its importance is not only scenic: it protects habitats of high ecological value and one of the largest colonies of griffon vultures in Spain. In the context of Burgos, the area combines natural heritage, forest conservation and public use linked to hiking and landscape observation, with a strong territorial identity in the Arlanza region.

Fernán González Tower

Fernán González Tower

Torre / Muralla

The Torreón de Fernán González is a medieval defensive tower located in Covarrubias, Burgos, also associated with the traditional name of Torreón de Doña Urraca. It is considered one of the oldest and most emblematic monuments of the town, linked to the history of the Castilian counts and the defense of the ford of the Arlanza River. Its construction dates back to the 10th century or the first half of that century, and several sources describe it as a work of Mozarabic tradition or, in more general terms, pre-Romanesque military architecture. In 1931 it was recognized as an Asset of Cultural Interest, which reinforced its patrimonial protection. The building has a rectangular floor plan and truncated pyramid-shaped volume, with ashlar masonry and very thick walls; the original entrance was located high up and the complex came to have arrow slits and battlements. The local tradition links it with Fernán González and with the legend of Doña Urraca, although this episode belongs to the legendary sphere and not to the proven historical one. Inside, there is an exhibition of medieval weapons and siege machines, which makes the tower a first-rate heritage and visitable resource within the historic center of Covarrubias. Some descriptions add that the complex includes later phases and additions, such as walls and the manor house, but the main nucleus is still the early medieval tower.
