Castle (13th to 16th centuries) · Castro Caldelas

MULTIEXPERIENCIA

Raised on a promontory, the castle of Castro Caldelas dominates the lands of Caldelas, an ancient crossroads of Roman roads. Its origin dates back to a pre-Roman castro and was a Roman camp because of its proximity to the Via XVIII. Pedro Fernández de Castro built the fortress in the 14th century, and it was the scene of the Irmandiña Revolt. Rebuilt as a palace in 1560, it passed to the House of Alba in 1777. Today it houses a library, museum and exhibition hall, being a cultural reference of the region. It was ceded in usufruct by the dukes to the municipality in the nineties.
