Casa-Museo Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
MuseoThe Casa-Museo Pedro Antonio de Alarcón is a museum of popular arts and customs located in Capileira, in the Barranco del Poqueira (Granada), within a municipality integrated in a Historic-Artistic Site. It is located in an old house of municipal property that preserves features of traditional Alpujarran architecture, in a very representative heritage environment of the Alpujarra of Granada. The space is dedicated to the life and work of Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, a 19th century writer from Granada, and to the material memory of the region. It was inaugurated in September 1972, on the occasion of the centenary of the author's journey through the Alpujarra, and in its beginnings it functioned as a House of Culture and Residence for Artists before being consolidated as an exhibition museum in 1979. Inside are displayed belongings, tools and objects of daily use collected largely thanks to donations from neighbors, in order to recreate the traditional life of the Alpujarra. The building is organized on two floors and two naves per floor, a distribution linked to the local popular architecture, and is a cultural resource that helps to interpret the social and domestic history of Capileira and its region.

Iglesia de la Virgen de la Cabeza
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of the Virgen de la Cabeza de Capileira is a parish church in the Alpujarra town of Capileira, in the province of Granada, dedicated to the patron saint of the municipality. It is located in the historic center of the village, in an environment of traditional architecture of the Alpujarra, and its function is both religious and devotional for the local population. The available informative documentation places its origin in the sixteenth century, shortly after the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Granada, on the site of an ancient mosque, although some sources indicate later reforms or reconstructions, especially in the seventeenth or eighteenth century. Therefore, the exact chronology must be understood as an ancient foundation with phases of rebuilding, not as a building of a single construction campaign. As for its architectural typology, it is a simple church, with one nave, linked to the rural parish model of the Alpujarra. The consulted sources emphasize in its interior the image of the Virgen de la Cabeza, considered the patron saint of Capileira, and the continuity of its cult throughout the centuries as a central element of religious and festive identity of the town. Its patrimonial interest resides in the link between the temple, the history of the Christian repopulation and the local devotional tradition, in addition to its integration in the monumental and landscape of Capileira, one of the most representative enclaves of the Alpujarra of Granada.

Its main interest is landscape and mountaineering use: it serves as a base for tours around the Mulhacén, the Barranco del Poqueira and access routes from Capileira, as the path of the Cebadilla or Hoya del Portillo. The place attracts by the combination of high mountain horizon, alpine environment and the presence of fauna of summits, besides being a common point of overnight stay and support for hikers. From the environmental point of view, it is part of the system of shelters and accesses of Sierra Nevada, an area of high ecological and landscape value protected. Its location, next to the left bank of the Mulhacén River and in an area with a harsh climate, explains its relevance as a mountain infrastructure and as a reference in the guides and routes of the region. There is no specific local legend associated with the refuge in the sources consulted. What is clear is its role as a natural and rural resource of Capileira, for its integration in the high mountain landscape and for being one of the most recognizable landmarks of the access to the heart of Sierra Nevada.
