Calaceite, a journey through time in the heart of the Matarraña region
Visita GuiadaGuided tour of the historic center of Calaceite, in the region of Matarraña (Teruel, Aragon), focusing on one of the best preserved urban areas in the area. The tour allows you to get to know a town with a strong heritage character, with cobbled streets, arcaded squares, stately homes and historic portals that reflect its former splendor. Calaceite preserves a well-kept medieval historic center, although its urban fabric also includes buildings from the modern and baroque periods. Local and regional tourist guides point out the presence of Renaissance facades, such as the town hall, and Baroque churches, as well as other unique elements such as the main street, the Plaza de España and the Portal de la Vila. The experience usually includes references to the Juan Cabré Museum and the Iberian settlement of San Antonio, linked to the archaeological interest of the municipality and the research carried out in the area. The tour, therefore, combines urban heritage, historical architecture and archaeological context in a brief and informative itinerary. It is a recommended visit to understand the historical evolution of Calaceite and its role as a heritage center of Matarraña, with special attention to its old town, traditional architecture and the most representative monumental landmarks of the town.

San Cristobal Chapel
ERMITAThe hermitage of San Cristóbal de Calaceite is a rural temple of the XVIII century located in the summit of the homonymous hill, in the vicinity of the urban helmet and within the landscape of the Matarraña of Teruel. It is a hermitage of ashlar masonry, of great dimensions, with unique ship, four sections and lateral chapels, which gives him a remarkable presence in the profile of the town and in the agricultural and low mountain environment that surrounds it. Its main interest is twofold: patrimonial and scenic. On the one hand, it is part of the group of historical hermitages of Calaceite and is linked to a local devotion documented at least since the first half of the eighteenth century; on the other hand, its elevated location makes it a natural viewpoint over the municipality and the soft and undulating relief characteristic of the region. The visit allows to appreciate the popular religious architecture of baroque tradition in a very representative enclave of the rural patrimony of Aragon. It is also a common place to visit on foot or on local itineraries because of its proximity to the village and the wide views, which help to understand the relationship between Calaceite, its topography and its agricultural landscape. There is no specific figure of environmental protection associated with the hill in the sources consulted, but it is listed in heritage and tourist reference directories of the region and Aragon.

Juan Cabré Museum
MuseoThe Juan Cabré Museum is a museum in Calaceite (Teruel, Aragon), under the Government of Aragon, dedicated to the figure of the Calaceite archaeologist Juan Cabré Aguiló and the dissemination of archaeological, artistic and ethnological heritage. It was born as a monographic museum about his life and work, and later expanded its contents to become a cultural center of reference in the field of archeology, contemporary plastic arts and ethnology. Its headquarters occupy an 18th century manor house located in the historic center of Calaceite. The building was built as a private home in 1790 and is an outstanding example of the civil architecture of its time; its museum adaptation respected many of the structural, functional and decorative elements of the old manor house. The collections are organized around three main themes: the figure of Juan Cabré, contemporary art and ethnology. This combination of traditional and modern collections gives the museum a unique personality within the Aragonese museum network, with special attention to research, conservation and dissemination of its collections. The museum is located in the old quarter of Calaceite, a town directly linked to the biography of Juan Cabré, born there in 1882. Its location and content make it a key heritage resource for understanding the cultural history of Matarraña and the relationship between local memory, archaeology and artistic heritage.

San Antonio Iberian Village
Patrimonio arqueológicoThe Iberian settlement of San Antonio is an archaeological site of Iberian heritage located in Calaceite, in the province of Teruel, on the hill of San Cristobal, about 2 kilometers from the town center. It is one of the most important settlements in the area and is part of the Iberian Route in Lower Aragon. Research places its occupation between the 6th century B.C. and its abandonment and destruction around the 2nd century B.C. The development of the settlement was organized in two phases: first it occupied the highest part of the hill and, at a later stage, it extended towards a hillside. The site preserves outstanding defensive elements, such as a wall built in the 3rd century B.C., several towers and a moat. It also has a characteristic urban layout, with a central street and terraced houses on either side, and the remains of cobblestone streets and rectangular houses, which are clearly visible during the visit. Its excavation was promoted by Juan Cabré in 1903. The complex was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and later declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2003, which confirms its relevance within the archaeological heritage of Calaceite and Matarraña.
