Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Church of Our Lady of the Rosary

Iglesia / Ermita

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary is the parish church of Bubión, in the Alpujarra region of Granada. It is located in the lower part of the town center, next to Plaza Doctor Pérez Ramón and near the ravine. It is a church clearly intended for parish use and a prominent feature of the landscape within the town’s historic district. Its origins date back to the 16th century, and tourist guides describe it as a building in the Mudejar style. According to various sources consulted, the church was built as part of the Christian reorganization following the conquest of the Kingdom of Granada, on the site of a former mosque. The building has undergone several transformations over time: it was damaged by the Alpujarras rebellion and by 19th-century earthquakes, which necessitated partial or nearly total rebuilding in later stages. This history explains its current appearance, which is the result of successive reconstructions rather than a single construction phase. Among its most frequently cited features are the single nave, the main façade, and the tower, which is linked to the remains of an ancient minaret or watchtower from the Islamic period. Its role as an urban and visual landmark in Bubión is also noted, due to its connection to the old cemetery and the town’s traditional layout.

Barranco del Poqueira Viewpoint

MIRADOR

The Poqueira Ravine Lookout is a scenic viewpoint located in Bubión, at an elevation of 1,300 meters, on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. It is essentially a parking area with unobstructed views of the Poqueira River valley, where you can see the three villages in the ravine: Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira, terraced along the steep slopes with their white houses featuring gray rooftops and cylindrical chimneys in the traditional Moorish style. From this vantage point, the Tresmiles mountain range serves as a backdrop, including the snow-capped peaks of Mulhacén and Veleta, as well as the gorge’s stunning vegetation—featuring chestnut trees—and the opposite slope where Veleta can be seen. The area is part of the Poqueira Ravine Historic Site, designated a Site of Cultural Interest, and is one of the most representative landscapes of the Alpujarra region of Granada, frequently cited in mountain travel guides as one of the most iconic landscapes in the province of Granada. The best time to visit is in the fall, when the colors of the landscape are at their most beautiful, or on clear days in spring and summer, when you can even see the Mediterranean Sea from Capileira.

Alpujarra House Museum

Alpujarra House Museum

Museo

The Casa Alpujarreña Museum is an ethnographic museum located in Bubión, in the province of Granada, within the Alpujarra region. It is located on Plaza de la Iglesia, at coordinates 36.94920, -3.35464, right in the heart of the town’s historic district. The building is a traditional Alpujarra home that has been converted into a museum to showcase the material culture and daily life of the region. Local sources date it as an old house linked to the Reconquista period and, more specifically, to the 16th century; in any case, its origins are associated with the rural domestic architecture that emerged after the expulsion of the Moriscos. Its heritage value lies in the preservation of the structure and atmosphere of an Alpujarra home, complete with domestic rooms and traditional furnishings. The exhibition brings together more than 500 objects related to agricultural practices, farm work, farming tools, household goods, and aspects of family life, offering a documented glimpse into the rural culture of the Alpujarra. It is, therefore, an ethnographic and local house-museum, designed to preserve and explain the traditional way of life in Bubión and its surroundings. Its appeal to tourists stems both from the historic building itself and from the collection that interprets the region’s material heritage.
