San Diego Chapel · Betancuria

MULTIEXPERIENCIA

The Hermitage of San Diego, located north of the Villa de Betancuria, stands next to the remains of the old Franciscan convent of San Buenaventura. Its origin is linked to a small cave where, according to tradition, San Diego prayed during his stay on the island (1441-1449). Rebuilt in the 17th century after the Berber raid of 1593, it is notable for its two-nave, hipped roof and an adjoining sacristy. Inside, arches on pillars separate the spaces, while the cave remains at the head as a place of special devotion.
