Cañón del Río Escalote

Cañón del Río Escalote

PARAJE

The Escalote River Canyon is a natural site in Berlanga de Duero, in the province of Soria, where the river fits into a narrow valley of limestone rock and models a landscape of strong geological interest. It is a narrow stretch of river, with slopes and cliffs that explain the shape of a sickle or canyon that gives its name to the resource, in an environment linked to the upper and middle course of the Escalote in Soria. The most striking thing for the visitor is the combination of rocky relief, riparian vegetation and the flow of water in a very secluded space, which offers a different image from the open countryside around Berlanga. The place is of interest both for its scenic value and for the contrast between the limestone, the riverbed and the presence of the gallery forest, especially noticeable on foot and at the viewpoints or accesses near the section of the canyon. Its relevance is associated with the protection and enhancement of one of the most recognizable natural landscapes of the municipality. In addition, the Escalote river is a tributary of the Duero and flows through the province of Soria, so this canyon is part of the natural fluvial heritage of the region and of the landscape identity of Berlanga de Duero. In local informative sources it also appears as an outstanding resource within the natural canyons of Soria.

Berlanga de Duero Castle

Berlanga de Duero Castle

Castillo

Berlanga de Duero Castle is a stately fortress located in Berlanga de Duero, in the province of Soria, on a hill overlooking the town and its surroundings. It is a defensive complex of great heritage value, classified as both a castle and a fortress, linked to the town’s medieval history and its strategic role in the defense of the Duero Valley. Official sources trace its origins to a 10th-century Muslim fortification—of which no remains are preserved today—and note the existence of walls that may date from the 12th century. The current complex is divided into two parts: an inner core from the 15th century built by the Tovar family, and an outer enclosure from the 16th century, designed for artillery defense, featuring thick walls and cylindrical towers. The typology and chronology demonstrate an evolution from medieval military architecture toward Renaissance defensive solutions. Among its most notable features are the keep in the inner enclosure—the main structure of the stately castle—as well as the trapezoidal layout of the outer complex, adapted to the terrain. Sections of the ramparts and turrets have also been preserved, reinforcing the monument’s defensive character. The complex was part of the historic defense system of Berlanga de Duero and was linked to the seigneurial power of the Tovar family.

San Baudelio Interpretation Center

San Baudelio Interpretation Center

Museo

The San Baudelio Interpretation Center is a museum dedicated to explaining the Mozarabic chapel of San Baudelio in Casillas de Berlanga, one of the region’s most notable examples of medieval Romanesque architecture. It is located in Berlanga de Duero (Soria), in the former municipal slaughterhouse, which has been renovated as an exhibition space, according to regional and municipal tourist information. Its exhibits focus on providing visitors with an educational overview of the original monument, featuring explanatory panels, audiovisual presentations, and a scale model, as well as resources on the history, architecture, and paintings of the chapel. The museum experience allows visitors to understand the artistic and religious context of San Baudelio before visiting the chapel itself, which is the true heritage landmark for which the museum serves as a prelude. The chapel that inspired the center was built around the 11th century and is considered a key work of Mozarabic art, featuring elements characteristic of early Romanesque architecture. The center, therefore, is not a medieval monument in and of itself, but rather a contemporary cultural facility designed to interpret this historical heritage and its surroundings in the Land of Berlanga. Due to its location in Berlanga de Duero, the facility is part of the town’s heritage circuit, situated near the castle and the palace of the Marquises of Berlanga, and serves a complementary role in providing information and cultural interpretation for visitors to San Baudelio and the municipality’s medieval heritage.

Collegiate Church of Santa María del Mercado

Collegiate Church of Santa María del Mercado

Iglesia / Ermita

The Collegiate Church of Santa María del Mercado is a collegiate church in Berlanga de Duero, in the province of Soria, located in the town’s historic center, in the area around Plaza de San Andrés. It is one of the municipality’s most important heritage sites and has been designated a Historic-Artistic Monument since 1931, with equivalent protection as a Site of Cultural Interest. It was built in the 16th century, between 1526 and 1530, during a period of religious reorganization in the town, when several medieval parishes were merged into a single collegiate church. The work is attributed to master stonemason Juan de Rasines and reflects a transitional style between the late Gothic and the Renaissance, featuring Gothic-Renaissance or late Gothic elements. Architecturally, it stands out for its grand scale and its hall-style layout, featuring three soaring naves and a transept, supported by cylindrical columns. The spaciousness and brightness of the interior are among its most notable features, along with the richness of its vaults and side chapels. Inside, the High Altar stands out, presided over by the late Romanesque carving of Our Lady of the Market, dating from the 12th century. Also noted as unique elements are several altarpieces and noble tombs, particularly those associated with the side chapels, which reflect the collegiate church’s religious and aristocratic significance in the history of Berlanga de Duero.
