Church of San Miguel
Iglesia / ErmitaThe Church of San Miguel de Ayllón (Segovia) is a Romanesque church located in the Plaza Mayor, next to City Hall, in the heart of the town’s historic center. Tourist guides rank it as one of Ayllón’s most significant heritage sites due to its location and its connection to the town’s medieval urban layout. It dates back to the 12th century, during the height of the Romanesque period in the region. Its architecture retains features characteristic of this style, including a cylindrical apse, a southern portal, and sculptural elements such as foliated capitals and corbels; some descriptions also place it within a late transition toward the Gothic style. It was the last church to be incorporated into the parish complex associated with Santa María la Mayor and was deconsecrated in 1902, at which point it began to serve civil and cultural purposes. Later, an attached structure that obscured its exterior was removed, allowing the building’s architectural character to be restored. Today it serves as a cultural and tourist venue, hosting exhibitions, concerts, and theatrical performances, and during the summer season it has housed the Tourist Office. Inside, there are also documented burials of historical interest, associated with prominent figures from the town.

RUTA_CORTAMontes Hontanares is a forested area with accessible trails located within the Sierra de Ayllón, a small secondary mountain range in the northeastern part of Ayllón that is part of the Sierra de la Buitrera or Sierra de Tejera Negra. This northwestern extension of the Cuerda de las Berceras stretches in a NW-N direction from the Pradera de Zopégado and the Collado de los Lobos to the Mirador de Piedras Llanas, forming a landscape of beech and oak forests. The most notable peaks include Cerro del Fontarrón or Zopégado (1,939 m), Cerro Gordo (1,906 m), Cerro Merino (1,799 m), and Alto de la Cruz (1,735 m). From the viewpoint, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Central and Iberian Mountain Ranges, as well as the “red” and “black” villages of the Sierra de Ayllón, especially from the nearby Piedras Llanas viewpoint. The area is part of the Micocyl network for mycological resource management, which adds ecological and economic significance to the region. The best time to visit is during spring or fall, when the forests are at their most colorful and weather conditions are most favorable for hiking.
