Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor

Collegiate Church of Santa María La Mayor

Iglesia / Ermita

The Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Alquézar is a monumental religious and heritage complex, classified as a church/collegiate church with a cloister and adjoining buildings, located in the upper part of the town of Alquézar, in the province of Huesca, Aragon. It stands on the rock overlooking the medieval historic district, at the indicated coordinates, and forms part of the area’s traditional fortified landscape. The current church is a late Gothic structure built between 1525 and 1532 on the initiative of the town council and designed by the architect Juan de Segura, on the site of an earlier Romanesque building. The complex preserves elements from different historical phases, featuring medieval features and later renovations, which explains its hybrid character combining religious, defensive, and monastic architecture. Among the most notable heritage features are the medieval cloister, with partially preserved Romanesque capitals; the watchtower; sections of the city wall; and the Chapel of San Nicostrato, added in the 17th century. Also noteworthy is the Museum of Sacred Art, housed in the upper cloister, which features liturgical objects and works from the medieval and modern periods. Its historical significance is linked to the Christian Reconquista and the transformation of an ancient fortress into a religious center. The combination of late Gothic architecture, Romanesque remains, and Mudejar additions makes the collegiate church one of the most important heritage sites in Alquézar and the Somontano de Barbastro region.

Cueva de Picamartillo

PARAJE

The Picamartillo Cave is a natural cavity located in the Vero River Canyon, within the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park, in the town of Alquézar, in the province of Huesca, Aragon. It is a karst landscape, shaped by the dissolution of limestone, where caves, rock shelters, and rocky cliffs are common. The geological formation is characterized by water erosion, which has carved out a unique cavity at the riverbed, next to a gravel beach. From the viewing point, visitors can see vertical limestone walls, metal walkways suspended several meters above the riverbed, and trails that allow visitors to explore the most scenic stretch of the Vero River, with spectacular views of the canyon and the medieval town of Alquézar. The area is part of a large protected area, recognized for its geological and scenic value and for the presence of cave paintings in nearby areas. The name Picamartillo comes from a local legend: it is said that, due to the cave’s echo, the sounds produced in the village’s blacksmith shops—the “clanging of hammers”—could be heard. The footbridge trail, which includes a visit to this cave, is well-marked and well-maintained, making it a very popular hiking route. The best time to visit is during spring and fall, when temperatures are more pleasant and the river level is moderate.

Casa Fabián Ethnological Museum

Museo

The Casa Fabián Ethnological Museum is an ethnographic and interpretive museum located in Alquézar, in the province of Huesca, within the Somontano de Barbastro region. The facility’s official record identifies it as a museum on Calle Baja, and local tourism sources refer to it as the Casa Fabián Museum or the Casa Fabián Ethnological Museum. The building is housed in a 17th-century Aragonese home that has been repurposed as a museum; consequently, its heritage value lies both in its traditional domestic architecture and in its role as an exhibition space. The facility preserves several rooms of the historic home and showcases the spatial layout typical of an Aragonese rural house. Its exhibits focus on daily life, customs, and folk arts in Alquézar and the surrounding Guara-Somontano region. Across eight spaces, the museum houses around 350 artifacts related to farming and livestock raising, including farming tools, the kitchen, the wine cellar, the water well, and other domestic rooms. Among the most notable features is an oil mill carved into the rock, which sources suggest may be of medieval origin or linked to medieval foundations, and which constitutes one of the most unique features of the complex.
