Panoramic view of the Plaza Mayor · Almagro

Almagro's Plaza Mayor is rectangular in plan, although irregular, formed by two flanks with colonnades of Tuscan stone columns that support running galleries. Originally open to the outside and for public use, today they are glazed with a Central European style that makes it unique in Spain. These galleries served as a tribune for festive and religious events, such as the old bullfights held until 1785, when they were banned by Charles III. They were accessed by stairs from Calle del Toril and Callejón del Villar, or by doors hidden in the arcades. These are supported by 81 stone columns with wooden footings, many with capitals raised by wedges to bridge the unevenness of the architrave. On one of its flanks is the famous Corral de Comedias, unique in the world, declared a monument in 1955. From the benches on the opposite side, you can enjoy an unparalleled panoramic view, with Diego de Almagro in the background.
