La Hoz Ravine

La Hoz Ravine

NATURAL

The Barranco de la Hoz is a limestone ravine of the Sierra de Albarracín, in the municipality of Albarracín, although the access and the best known visitable section are articulated from the nearby towns of Calomarde and Frías de Albarracín. It is dug by the Blanco or Fuente del Berro river, which has carved a narrow canyon between Jurassic rocks and very vertical walls, within the mountainous landscape of the Sistema Ibérico of Teruel. Its main interest is in the relief: a fluvial lace of strong landscape value, with walkways, stairs and bridges installed to cross the interior of the gorge and to observe closely the riverbed, the cliffs and the riverside vegetation. From the upper part, the trail also allows you to contemplate the gorge from natural viewpoints and understand the depth of the ravine and its geological modeling. The site is part of the Sierra de Albarracín, a mountain territory highly appreciated for its combination of nature, trails and rural heritage. The area is integrated in the Cultural Park of Albarracín and in the protected landscape environment of the region, which reinforces its environmental and informative value. It is a particularly interesting resource for visitors looking for hiking, geology and landscape, rather than just a passing point.

San Pedro Mill Waterfall

CASCADA

The Cascada del Molino de San Pedro is a waterfall in the municipality of El Vallecillo, in the Sierra de Albarracín, very close to Albarracín, Teruel. It is formed in the course of the Cabriel River and takes its name from the old mill located next to the place, whose remains are still cited in local descriptions. The most common reference places it in an environment of small ravine and riparian vegetation, typical of the mountain landscapes and high bioclimatic transition of the Sierra de Albarracín. The main interest of the place is landscape: the waterfall, the lower pool and the humid environment create one of the most visited corners of the region for walking, photography and contemplation of the water. It is also a frequent bathing spot in summer, although the water is usually cold. The area is accessed by a short trail from the vicinity of El Vallecillo, which makes it attractive for a short visit without technical requirements. Its tourist relevance is linked to the natural image of the Sierra de Albarracín and to the ethnographic value of the old mill, which explains the place name. Various sources also frame it within the Cabriel Valley Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO in 2019, which reinforces its environmental interest and its integration into a territory of high ecological value.

Bezas Lagoon

Bezas Lagoon

PARAJE

The Bezas Lagoon is a freshwater mountain wetland, the largest in the Sierra de Albarracín, located between the municipalities of Bezas and Albarracín, in the surroundings of the Pinares de Rodeno Protected Landscape. It is located at an altitude of 1,200-1,235 m and, when it is full, it reaches about 4 hectares in surface; its shape and extension vary greatly depending on rainfall and snow, because it depends on natural contributions without permanent upwelling. What makes it unique is the combination of water sheet, pine forests of oak and junipers that surround it, in a very representative landscape of the Iberian System of Teruel. In the lagoon aquatic and wetland plants develop, and it is common to observe aquatic birds such as the common coot, as well as other species linked to these environments, along with amphibians and fauna associated with shallow waters. Its visitable interest is twofold: scenic and biological. From the shore, the contrast between the water mirror and the wooded hills of reddish sandstone can be appreciated, and from the nearby heights there is a complete view of the wetland framed by the odeno. The place has been described as the great wetland of the sierra and appears frequently in routes and hiking guides for the Sierra de Albarracín. In addition to its natural value, the lagoon has environmental relevance for being integrated in a protected area of the odeno, which helps to preserve an enclave very sensitive to climatic variations and pressures on water. Its local interest is also supported by its character as an emblematic place of the municipality, well known by visitors looking for quiet nature and inland scenery.

Pinares de Rodeno

Pinares de Rodeno

NATURAL

The Pinares de Rodeno Protected Landscape is a protected natural area located in Albarracín, within the Sierra de Albarracín, in the province of Teruel. It also covers land in Bezas and Gea de Albarracín, and occupies 6,829.05 hectares; its elevations range from approximately 1,095 to 1,602 meters above sea level. It is a landscape of great geological and geomorphological interest, modeled on sandstones and reddish conglomerates of the Permotrías and Buntsandstein. On this substratum dominates the pine or resin pine, which forms very characteristic wooded extensions and contrasts with the rocky forms, ridges and shelters that give personality to the place. The most striking for the visitor is the combination of red stone, pine forest and capricious relief, with very photogenic rocky areas and trails between large blocks and natural shelters. In addition, the space preserves manifestations of Levantine rock art, integrated in the cultural scope of the Sierra de Albarracín, which adds historical and patrimonial value to the visit. Its relevance derives both from its protection as a natural landscape and from its cultural and educational interest. The Government of Aragon includes it in the Network of Protected Natural Spaces and highlights its landscape, biological and archaeological value; it was also the first protected natural space declared in Teruel, in 1995, and was extended in 2007 to its current extension.
