Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions Pedro Antonio de Alarcón

Located in the charming village of Capileira in the Sierra Nevada, the “Pedro Antonio de Alarcón” Museum of Folk Arts and Customs is a cultural treasure that pays tribute to one of the most prominent writers of 19th-cent

Opened in 1972 to commemorate the centennial of the author’s journey through the Alpujarra, the museum began as a cultural center and artists’ residence. However, it was in 1979 that it became a permanent exhibition space, showcasing local folk arts and customs. Across its two floors and spacious halls, visitors can explore a rich collection of household items and tools that have been an integral part of daily life in this region, many of which have been donated by the residents of Capileira themselves.

The museum stands out not only for its valuable collection but also for its ability to recreate the cozy atmosphere of a typical Alpujarra home. On display here are household items, local crafts, and farming tools that illustrate rural life in this beautiful mountainous region.

Capileira, known as the highest village in the Barranco de Poqueira and considered the “Gateway to the Sierra Nevada,” offers a breathtaking setting that perfectly complements the museum experience. With its rich history and connection to Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, this museum is a must-see for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of the Alpujarra.
