Last Friday, October 9, the Fundación José María de Jaime in Villanueva de los Infantes inaugurated “TRIVEDO, tres visiones artísticas sobre la figura de Quevedo”, an art exhibition featuring different approaches to the figure of Francisco de Quevedo by three local artists: Miguel Medina, Modesto Sánchez, and Pedro López.
The exhibition’s common thread is the multifaceted nature that characterizes Quevedo: his facet as a metaphysical poet, his satirical genius, and his biography of marked lights and shadows, which make him a fascinating figure beyond his work. The three artists explore different styles to offer a unique interpretation not only of his person and his work, but also of his inner personality.
The exhibition also acknowledges the author's bond with Villanueva de los Infantes, the municipality where he met his death in 1645, in a cell at the Convento de Santo Domingo. After many vicissitudes, his remains were identified in 2007 and reinterred in their original burial site, the Iglesia de San Andrés. Quevedo was also part of the prominent circle of humanists in the Golden Age of Infantes, linked to the Escuela de Gramática of Bartolomé Jiménez Patón.
This artistic approach to the figure of Quevedo also takes place in the year that marks the 4th Centenary of the publication of one of his most famous texts, El Buscón. "A work that became a myth in a 17th-century Castile that was beginning to show signs of exhaustion and death," in the words of historian Luis Riaza, who gave a lecture on the author at the exhibition's opening ceremony.
During his presentation, Luis Riaza reviewed Quevedo's biography, pointing out how his contemporaries viewed the writer, as well as how his figure is perceived today. “I was inspired by the expression 'to bring art into life,' something truly characteristic of Quevedo, who knew how to make his life a true art,” Riaza noted in reference to the exhibition's theme.
“TRIVEDO, tres visiones artísticas sobre la figura de Quevedo” can be visited at the Fundación José María de Jaime in Villanueva de los Infantes until October 18, coinciding with the celebration of the Ruta de los Patios. Opening hours are from 12:00 to 13:00 in the morning, and from 17:30 to 20:30 in the afternoon.
